That Was A Powerfully Dramatic Moment........

when he went to research AIDS in the library and the librarian asks him to read it in another room away from people, but Andrew angrily tells him 'no'. This gave an excellent depiction of what people with AIDs must go through. The discrimination must be unbearable and humiliating.

Interesting. I'm watching this movie for the umpteenth time and just noticed a nuance I never have. When Denzel Washington's character is studying in library he is scrutinized in a prejudicial way, and that may have been a turning point where he realizes that Beckett is the victim of prejudice just as he has been as a black man and decides to help him. I don't know why I never noticed that guy walking by staring at Washington as if to sneer, "why is there a black man in here?" It's a pivotal point in the movie and the subject of prejudice.

Just watched the movie again today and was wondering why the guy looked at Denzel's character like that in the library. You may have just answered it. Great observation uwsupergirl.

He looked at him strange because he had been eating an the library, which was probably against the rules, you can see how Washington stopped chewing and tried to hid the fact that his mouth was full when the guard looked his way.

Originally I thought the guy was giving Denzel dirty looks because he was eating in the library! I rewatched today and can see now that it was probably a race thing.

I agree with those of you above. One could say, I suppose, it was Joe's (Denzel) karma for his prejudice against people with AIDS and gay people, thus leading to his turning point.

reply

No you're right, he looked at him because he was eating, it's strange to have racism just in that part of the story and the rest lacking any, just the exact moment when Beckett got harassed as well, it would have been too big of a coincidence. If that was true, you could catalog it the worst library on the planet.
