question about graduation USA

OK, I saw this movie, and coincidentally I saw the third part of The shining too today; in both movies you see a graduation, and I've seen a lot more in other movies.

I noticed that in most movies the graduates wear black robes, but in some, like in these two, the graduates wear a purple or a yellow robe.

Does the color have any particular meaning?

reply

Black is a universal color for graduation robes. The purple robes and yellow robes in this movie are likely used because those are the schools "colors". For instance, my high school's colors were purple and white, and a rival school district uses blue and white as their colors.

To answer your question, nope, most schools have two or more colors chosen to represent it, like with sports uniforms. Sometimes they use black graduation robes if they don't want to use their colors. But robe colors for graduation have no special meaning beyond school colors.

Robes are usually the school colors, so it depends on the school colors. Us Americans love our graduations so I've worn a robe that is yellow/blue, white/green, and black/silver

Yey robes and colors

My school's colors were black and blue. When I graduated the guys wore black and the girls wore blue. My cousin graduated a week before me and her school's colors were brown and gold and almost yearly the graduating classes used black as an alternative for graduation.

In high school, we used the school colors. They were black and white. The boys wore black, the girls wore white. Being a girl, I was thankful because it was hot as hell that day sitting out on the football field. I felt sorry for the guys!!

In college, our colors were crimson and gold, but our robes were black with a crimson and gold hood. The color of your tassle in college reflected your major. At least at my school it did....
