Do y’all think this was an error in lexicon selection (writers/editing crew) or a subtle jab at humoring the audience with insight into the subconscious projections (auto-erotic asphyxiation) Gennaro is unknowingly/naively sharing with his peers?

I always took it as showing Gennaro as an inept nerd. Just because he was a lawyer, it doesn't make him automatically smart. I was also humor for the audience.
