James Cameron as the director.

I really love this film as it is. But I also wonder how that version would be like.

To be honest, I don't think Cameron would have shown any interest whatsoever in directing JP because it's based on a novel. Cameron likes to write his own stuff.

He almost directed it. Spielberg beat him to the rights. I read that it would have been much more violent, more like Aliens, but also said its better that Spielberg directed it because it was a good dinosaur movie that kids could watch.

reply

It wouldn't have been anywhere near as good.

I'm personally glad Spielberg directed it.

James Cameron has previously commented on the film and what it could have been like if he directed it

when I saw the film, I realised that I was not the right person to make the film, he was. Because he made a dinosaur movie for kids, and mine would have been aliens with dinosaurs, and that wouldn?t have been fair.

?Dinosaurs are for 8-year-olds. We can all enjoy it, too, but kids get dinosaurs and they should not have been excluded for that. His sensibility was right for that film, I?d have gone further, nastier, much nastier.?

I wonder how the sequels would have gone as Cameron makes good sequels. I would like to see a darker version more along what Cameron had said.

With Cameron it would not have been the great movie it is.

From what I have just read in this topic, Cameron wanted to make it as violent as the book. I do like this film but it would have been cool to keep the R rated violence of the book. But I understand films back then (and today) are marketed towards kids via toys.

I would like to note that while I love the book(s) especially, for me Steven Spielberg and other creators found the perfect balance for the movie version to allow it to be viewed by younger audience also.
