Question about the twins......

I've seen this movie a few times and really enjoyed it (never read the book though) but I still have not been able to understand why Suyuan had to abandon her twins. What am I missing? I understand that it was war time and all and providing for them and herself would be difficult but was abandoning them the only answer? Also, do they ever mention in the book who saved the twins and how were they ever able to find out the twins survived or even locate them for that matter?

The mother was very sick and thought she was going to die. She did not want her body to be found with the babies. It does explain it in the movie, in the voice-over of June's Dad in that scene. She thought that if she died and her body was with the babies, nobody would pick up the babies and take care of them, because they would think that they had a "ghost mother" following them around.

I don't remember all of the details about who found the babies and who ended up taking care of them, or how they finally tracked them down. It does say that she left all of her gold jewelry and a note wrapped up with the babies, telling them to take the babies to a relative of her husband's in the city (can't remember now which city). I have seen the movie many times, but it has been several years since I read the book. I do remember thinking that the movie is really not that much like the book.
