The Phillip Winter character ...

There's a character called Phillip Winter in "Far away so close", and there's a Phillip Winter also in Wenders' film "Lisbon Story" (who is a sound engineer), in both instances played by the same actor Rüdiger Vogler. Any idea why this is so? I can't make out a reason on the fly, but then I haven't finished watching "Far away so close" yet. Any connection between the two characters that as yet escaped me?

This is an old, old post, but just in case...Phillip Winter (Rüdiger Vogler again) also appears in "Until the End of the World", as a foil for William Hurt and Solveig Dommartin's characters. In that movie, he's an international bounty hunter tracking William Hurt across continents.

Well, Rüdiger Vogler also plays in "Alice in the cities", "Wrong Move" and "King of the Road".

Well, as Vogler says himself in one of the special features in the German Blu Ray: Wenders asked him what name the character should have in "Faraway, So Close!", and he said for the fun of it: "Maybe Philip Winter", because he liked that name and he had used it before in a Wenders film. And Wenders said, ok, fine then :) And thus they used it regularly for a Vogler character...
