I mean releasing this type of movie in the summer?? what were they thinking back then lol..i can see why it bombed though but at least had a huge cult following despite getting trashed by critics.
sure some events don't make sense but it's one of the rarest halloween movies that's non-horror to enjoy š¼
Doesn't make a lot of sense to release a Halloween-themed movie in July. I think it gathered a huge following as a result of it being shown around Halloween. Disney Channel aired it for quite a few years (maybe they still do?).

Because Batman Returns is a Batman movie first and the fact it's set in Christmas is secondary. Hocus Pocus without Halloween is like.....well it's like something.

Again, Gremlins is a movie about horrific little creatures first and taking place during Christmas has little bearing on the plot. Hocus Pocus is made clear that this is a Halloween movie.

They released Halloween H20 and Halloween:Resurrection in the summer time. Maybe they thought it would make more money in the summer. I don't know.

I think it's dumber to release a Halloween movie in July. The entire movie takes place on Halloween. It would be like releasing A Christmas Story on Labor Day weekend.

It does makes sense these days to release Horror movies in July because they usually come out 10-14 weeks later on video but this movie came out on VHS 14 months later in September of 94.
shareOh wow, I had completely forgotten about that! I don't even think a rental was available for that long. It just seemed like Disney did not care about this movie at the time since it bombed in theaters.
I'm glad it garnered a cult following over the years. It's such a sweet and simple Halloween flick that hasn't aged at all. It's still watchable, even to this day.
I'm sure if there were ever a sequel, then it would be a guaranteed hit. Disney is stupid for not even considering it.

I just now realized that myself. Yeah, if you are going to do a holiday-themed movie then release it when the season is right. It's definitely a cult film regardless so it definitely didn't really set it back in the long run. Though it probably would've helped it be a major hit if they released it around Halloween.
