If it was a staged robbery

would't they want evidence of forced entry? Kimble was going to be killed (along with his wife), so no need to frame him. So why didn't they forcibly enter, in order to credible set the scene for a 'robbery gone wrong'?

That whole botched murder is a giant plothole in this movie.

The killer fucks up on every level, yet everything magically frames Kimble as if it was planned.
Including the lame police and the wife's accusation.

That's not a plot "hole", more like a plot convenience. Nichols got extremely lucky when his plan went all wrong.

The killer expected both Kimble and his wife to be there. Best to first sneak in undetected and then kill them by surprise, after which he could stage forced entry. But this didn't happen. Kimble was called away and then returned catching the killer in the act. The killer was then forced to flee before he could finish the job.
