Aiding and abetting?

When Nichols admits to the Marshals that he saw Kimble and gave him money, wouldn't that make him guilty of aiding and abetting a known fugitive and convicted murderer? Did the Marshals not arrest him because it was only a few dollars and wouldn't hinder their pursuit much?

Well technically aiding and abetting refers to the commission of the crime. This would probably fall under obstruction of justice since he facilitated Richard escaping justice by giving him money. In all fairness I think what you said about it only being a couple of bucks is probably true. Gerard didn't strike me as a trivial man, hauling an influential doctor with probably the best lawyer in Chicago to jail over a few bucks. Besides it's probably more beneficial to let him be and watch him in case Richard makes contact again. After helping Richard once they'd have no trouble getting a warrant to bug his phone.
