shareDefinitely computers. When it first came out, it looked realistic (to me, anyway) but now I can see how fake it really is. We've been spoiled by special effects from other movies, such as Lord Of The Rings ;)

The whale probably coulda done the jump just not over the wall. Remember he was in captivity where they had him from a baby so he would have bn trained in how to jump.
shareIt must have been computers because 1) I think it's fairly obvious <<(not meaning to sound rude in any way) 2)the 'computerised' bit shows the whale falling downwards ,therefore you cannot see Willy's face and so you can't see Willy's more obvious personal markings (i.e his eyepatch, rostrum etc..) and 3)orca whales simply cannot jump that high.

a life sized double of keiko an orac canot jumo that hight exspchialy not a male orca keiko was nearly 13,000 pounds and most male orcas have trouble getting there whole body out of the water only 2 full grown males can do it that is in captivity and they are only around 9,000
sharenot to mention, recapturing "Willy" / Keiko to do the two sequels, what the uproar would have been! :D
shareLOL...at one point the miami sea aquarium wanted 2 re-capture keiko to be the star of the park along side lolita but could u imagin lolita lives in the smallest orca "pool" ever and keikos was considered to small for him when in captivity. when at miami this is maybe half the size and only 20feet deep keiko was around 24feet!!! That almost made me sick

lol, that reminds me of this muck up on a Simpsons episode. Homer was watching 'Free Willy' the bit at the end and he was going "Come on Willy!" and 'Jesse' was like "GO!", then 'Willy' didn't make it and got squished.
Homer: Jump, Free Willy. Jump! Jump with all your might!
[on the TV, Willy jumps over a rock barrier as a little boy
smiles, but a shadow looms on his face and the smile turns to
fear]
Woman: Oh, no. Willy didn't make it. And he crushed our boy!
Man: Ew. What a mess.
Homer: Ohh, I don't like this new director's cut.
have a *beep* nice day :) bitch
when i was little and my cousin told me it was computers i was all YOUR LIEING!!! it was tramatic. and to this day i wanna believe the whale jumped over the barrier. my cousin is a bitch....
shareIt was CGI, as an Orca will not jump something unless it knows how deep the water is on the other side, so they would never have got Keiko to jump it...
With him escaping, they could have trained him to go to a certain point after a sound is made (e.g. a small bay), and then load him onto a transporter and take him back to the aquarium...
screw you guys, I'm going home.
