Whales...

Okay whales, due to their density, will be crushed if they are out of water for a long time.(Hence BEACHED whales) so how can they get Willy on the back of that truck without the whale dying? They wouldn't be able to.

Yes, Keiko's dorsal fin was really curled and it happens to many mature male orcas in captivity. There are even a few wild males that have curled dorsal fins. Female orcas in captivity tend to just tilt/bend and not fully curl.

Hi TakeYourHatredOutOnMe, I know this is a bit late, but I'm gonna make an addition to this:

I'm Mexican and live in the border, I never lived in Mexico City, but I knew Keiko was a huge star there in Reino Aventura ("Adventure Kingdom") fairground, just like Shamu in Sea World-San Diego. I never saw Keiko live -though I did see Shamu- but there were many documentals shown on TV here about his leaving and I learned that one thing that made Keiko's dorsal fin to curl is that the tank where he was, was getting little since Keiko was growing large in time.

Shamu doesn't have a curled dorsal fin, but I guess Shamu's tank was bigger and that Shamu's dorsal fin was back-curved, like a dolphin's, and Keiko was straight, like sharks; don't really know if this affects, but I think a curved fin is stronger in keeping its shape than a straight one.

I think it depends on the animal and on the space of the place they live in.

Hi there, Saddlepatch, I respect your opinion, I just said what it seemed to me out of the observations I made in that time (now by seeing that documental about Keiko, I read more about orcas to have a better informed opinion).

It seems that female orcas have a more "bending-resistant" fins than males, due to what you say and also to the fact that they're shorter... "Shamu'87" wasn't curled, I saw it, now I see she was a female (as TakeYourHatredOutOnMe noted) and that's why...

What I said about the size of the tank of Keiko: Well, you should have seen it live in Mexico City or at least in TV (as I did) to see IT WAS little for Keiko's size, believe me; he couldn't fit in it loger, he had to be moved and thank God they did, the least you want for your pet is to suffer cos it gives you joy and amusement, they didn't want exactly the same for Keiko...

By the way, I heard Japanese girls named "Keiko" what seemed 0K for me since I had the notion that Japanese female names ended in -ki (Oyuki, Suzuki) and in -ko (Ayuko, Mitsuko), so the first time I heard of him (back in 1986) I thought "Hey, that's wrong, he has a female name!"... But then again, I learned from a Japanese movie that they use names in a sort of "unisex" way (there were two characters named "Itsuke", boy and girl); and since since "Keiko" means "Lucky one" I can see it's the same, and boy he was a lucky one!!

Actually not... Poor of her! And at 40!!! WOW!!! She's all a vet, isn't she?? ;-) The names of the sites are kinda ADEQUATE...

Yeah, no reason to worry about the tilting/flopping, but many people don't know (reason I think this board started)... Some time -I don't remember when- they made a Keiko special on TV here, one of the trainers said that about his fin (the interviewer asked) so everyone could know... Guess it was just in Mexico and not in the States! ;-) :-))

From research, I've found that the flopped dorsal fin is caused by gravity and spending too much time near the surface (as people have already said). The reason that it happens to males (as opposed to the females only tilting) is because females have smaller, almost triangular dorsal fins which are sturdier( someone mentioned that). Males have large, taller fins, which flop much easier. If soemone said this already, sorry. The whales I've met (Nootka, Kandu[rest in peace], Kiska, and Athena at Marineland Ontario) all were in captivity for a while except for Athena, who is two. Kandu's fin was completely drooped over, while Kiska's and Nootka's were only slightly tilted.
