I really wish they didn't call the movie free willy, it's just too embarrassing when you say you like it and it warrants too many jokes.

i disagree. the reason why i say is because i think the producers, and the writer of free willy had an idea. and that idea was to make the movie and also see if theres a way they can help free the whales that were in captivity like they did with the real life orca star (Keiko). plus there was a point to the title, and the fact was is that the plot of the movie was about a boy who became friends with the orca but saw something out of the orca that was extremely serious that he felt bad about. and there were reasons for why he felt bad about it and he felt so bad his idea was to free willy (not just because of that tank situation but also because willy really wanted to be with his family). that was probably the idea of the producers is that free the whales that were in captivity so those whales can be with their own family and their own kind.

Uh, I don't think the OP has a problem with the use of the word 'free' or the fact that the movie producers wanted to promote whale conservation or whatever but it's more an objection to the name of the whale. I agree - could they seriously not come up with another name?! To be fair though, i think 'willy' as slang for male genitalia is more of a British thing...but you'd think SOMEBODY would have realised.

Beyonce, Pink the color, Pink the person, Hot Dogs, basically anything that is awesome.

The thing about Keiko was that he kept coming back they released him so many times but he always returned he never learned to fend for himself

Favorite line in the movie: "We've got to wet Willy; He's almost completely dry!" Terrible terrible name for the whale lol

WRONG. I live here in the states as well and Willy is NOT a popular name. It may be a popular nickname for someone named Willard, or William, but Willy by itself is not a popular name. And yes, "Willy" is also slang for "penis" here as well, Scott.

I live in a mostly black area near New Orleans, and I went to high school with several guys named Willy. And I've only heard British people on tv and online use it as a slang for penis.

In Austin and San Antonio, I've never heard anyone referred to as Willy. In elementary school, willy was one of the most used terms for a penis. I remember many Free Willy jokes back then; we also would say "free willy!" when we used the bathroom.

I wish the whale wasn't called that bloody name! It is an orca people! They are the most beautiful and intelligent hunters of the sea, they deserve a name that symbolizes them. Why not give him a name that is N.A. for lost child or stolen child.

I understand what you are saying. On the Episode of The Simpsons when the kids are locked in the school because of a snow storm Principal Skinner was giving Grounds Keeper Willy an order. Willy was tired of him telling him what to do so Ground's Keeper Willy said.

"Skinner, this is the last time you slap your Willy, around. I just thought that was funny and I know where you are getting at.
