Why is the rating on this so low?

It had a great story, good acting, was financially sucessfull as well as critically sucessful. Why is the rating on imdb so low? This is one of my favorite movies from my childhood...

It does seem quite low.
I myself just gave it an 8.

I think Free Willy 2 gets 6
And Free Willy 3 a 5

I have not seen the new one yet and did not know it was even out till the other day.

I gave it a 6. I don't think it deserves anything significantly more than that personally.

It is pretty low, it's not a perfect film but it's enjoyable and memorable.

Probably because most people considered it a boring movie for kids.

93, turned 19 2 days before release, son turned 5 day after release and daughter was just a year...time really flies...sad thing is think ratings on here and on a couple of other sights are reflective of those who are of the mind that if it dont bleed wont lead and if it is not in constant motion and over stimulation that dont allow the human to think then it just is not worth much...boring is a word that honestly today we need, it fosters creative thinking and well all this 24/7 planning with every moment counted for...sorry there is plans and time that they are needed but we as adults and now our children have no time, and seems some really dont want anyone to think and well be bored...ok done ranting

Yes, my son was born 3 days after 14th birthday...He is 27 now, has had bosses fight over him at 14 as he was a good worker; been a manager that all loved at same place his uncle worked, his uncle, not so liked...They were my children, so I raised them, though did have a few older friends who thought i could look after for free, their babies as they went out to party all the time, did not like me asking for $ up front as they thought if i was home anyway...told them if they wanted their babies then look after them, go out once in awhile, but if they still wanted to be a teen then adoption should have been the choice...pet peeve was/is teens who have their babies, show them off as "toys", then turn around wanting someone else to look after their children with no responsibility other than to show them off. No it is not easy, but no one ever said it was. Ok done ranting...oh and am still waiting for grandbabies
