Fuckin Ruthie, lol

How the HELL did that lady get that part? Musta been a producers wife or something.

Wtf lol

reply

Who?

reply

Paul Sorvinos secretary

reply

Wasn’t she played by a famous actress?

reply

No idea but whoever she was the actress was pretty bad.

You disagree?

reply

I looked it up. The actress was Holly Hunter. It’s been a long time since I saw the firm but I seem to remember she played Gary Busey’s secretary a bit over the top at first but came back down to Earth by the end of the film. I think she was nominated for the best supporting actress Oscar for her performance.

reply

The post asked about Paul Sorvino's secretary, not Gary Busey’s secretary.

reply

Oh my bad. But that lady was in the film for all of like 15 seconds by my memory. She didn’t even get a chance to give a bad performance.

reply

that is what I recall also

reply

uh, not to argue but it was a pretty bad 15 s3econds lol.

she had 2 lines.

don't take my word, you go back and replay her scene then decide for yourself. :)

reply

Ot so over the top affected that it takes you out of the scene

reply

For some reason I thought you were talking about Gary Busey’s secretary played by Holly Hunter. What was so bad about the lady who played Paul Sorvino’s secretary? My memory is she barely had any lines

reply

she had 2 lines. she looked like she was staring into the barrel of a gun at a firing squad line. and her vocal delivery was just weird.

go rewatch that clip and hit me back....

reply

I watched it on youtube last night. Here’s the clip I watched:
https://youtu.be/ikBZK-sG2A8
Her suit was way too large and she has really bad bags under her eyes which emphasized the point you were making that she looks like she got the part via nepotism. What I really noticed was her dopey arm swinging as she walked into the room. Like C3PO from Star Wars. So, now that you called my attention to it, I have to agree

reply

thanks for backing me up. yes that's the clip.

dang, i didn't catch the C3P0 arm thing till you mentioned it but youre right! looks like a kind-of charlie chaplin move, lol. i think he used to swing like that as he entered the stage.

also did you notice the weird eye bulge thing she does at 0:14 of the clip you sent? like she paused between her lines to BUG her eyes at those men as some sort of warning or sabre rattling lol

reply

I’ve got to say you proved your point. Her acting is bizarre.

reply

I always assumed she was trying to portray that being a secretary for the mob was exhausting and soul sucking.
Her performance is a bit odd, but I never considered it horrible/bad.

reply

you could be right. it didn't strike me that way but i get what you are saying.

i would say they could've looked for a different way to telegraph that sentiment

reply

You are probably right. It probably could have been done better, but it seems to me to be a very insignificant detail. Perhaps I am missing the larger point.

reply

Nah. Theres no big point to it. Just a trivial observation. That its odd someone with that (lack of) skill is in an otherwise gangbusters film.

Just humorous to me. Didnt mean for my oost to be taken too seriously.

reply

Honestly, some of the best posts on MovieChat involve trivial shit that I would never have otherwise known or noticed

reply

Exactly.

:)

reply

She looked like she hasn't slept in a week. Maybe the director told her to act exhausted though, because being a secretary for those two was a like a 24hr gig.

reply

lol yes. 'the life and times of a mafia secretary' lol

reply

Yes! Lol

reply

I really enjoyed it. It was a slickly made film, really well acted and directed. It was a crack up

reply

yes it is a fine film. i rewatch it on a regular basis. (gave it a go this morning, actually!)

great story, great plot, good characters, but i give most credit to Robert Towne for his writing. he just makes stuff good.

oh, and Pollack too. He always does a good job. In fact I'd say this movie is oddly similar to Three Days of the Condor in some ways. (you seen that one?)
