Hackman way too old, Triplehorn too reserved and upper-crust.

Hackman looked like a REALLY old geezer in the film. Not sure how old he was in 1993, but even with the wonders of make-up he looked about 70. Even thinking Triplehorn would consider kissing him, much less boinking him, is absurd and, well, creepy.

The problem is casting. The character played by Hackman should have been someone mid-way between the old partners and the young Cruise- probably a late 30's guy. THEN all the whoring and scuba diving would make sense, as well as Triplehorn's semi-attraction to him.

And Triplehorn is too cool and in-control for the role. In a marriage, she'd run the show and Cruise would be kept on a very tight leash.

While Hackman's acting is good, I always thought he was a distraction in the film (yes, he looked too old). So yeah, I can't disagree with what you said.

As for Tripplehorn, her performance wasn't bad (at least to me), but she just wasn't right for the role either.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

I didn't buy her being married to Mitch, but for the character, she was pretty accurate, coming from money and being raised to be a proper young lady.

Her behavior in the restaurant after hearing about Mitch's infidelity was perfectly stoic, reserved and cold.

I didn't think he looked too old at all. I would chose him over Cruise any day, and I'm younger than Cruise. Gene Hackman is distinguished and a gentleman, and that's attractive in itself.

Hackman was cast well for the character in the book. The flirting with romance between his character Avery and the wife didn't happen in the book. Jeanne Tripplehorn's characterization was a little off.

You think so? I did not see the Avery of the book that way. In the book he was a workout fiend, and that does not describe Hackman. In the book he seemed in his 40's, or maybe 50 to me. I could be a bit off, but I believe that is the age the book went for.

I don't blame them for casting Hackman. He is a great actor, and sometimes movies deviate from a book in order to cast someone they think will bring something to the role.

Hackman was 62.

He played Avery as a late middle-aged guy going through an extended midlife crisis, which he battled by chasing young chicks.

i agree with you. on both people

i always hated triplehorn in this cause she's so, just snobby or something. underwear too tight or something

yeah hackman was too ancient, totally unrealistic. good point about the water sports etc too

i just reread chapter one today and i had forgot but the oldest guy in the firm was the holbrook character who in the book was only around 50. (they called holbrooks char the 'grandfather' of the firm). the other partners (hackman and the others) were all younger than the 'grandfather' dude, meaning they were mid 40s or even 30s

so yeah water sports and skiing and scuba and all that would be just right for those ages. but not for a 70 looking hackman. it was just poorly cast. i love pollack but he messed up there.

and geesh holbrook looked 80 so he was way too old.

in the book, by that age he woulda been at home long since retired living the good life with all his money

Funny Hackman never seemed to age much, he had that 50-ish look even from his French Connection days to his last movie.

reply

70? Maybe to a kid. A hard late 50s/early 60s. He was 63, by the way. And it's amazing what power, money and confidence will do to a woman. Another thing you'll learn when you grow up.

She did what she had to do to help Mitch get the files so they could get the lives back and to exact some kind of revenge for his infidelity.

You think men lose interest when they pass 40? Hackman was at his oily best.

reply

To a child, anybody over 30 looks "ancient". But the reality is that women like men, not boys. Particularly men who are intelligent, educated, refined, cultured, articulate, mature, experienced, and attentive. Oh, and being wealthy doesn't hurt either. Men who have those attributes in their fifties (and beyond) get a lot more interest from beautiful women than eternally adolescent boys with tattoos on their necks and metal prongs shoved through their faces.

reply

Sorry, but it just didn't work in this case. Gene is an excellent actor, and he's at his best in The Firm. But he looked every bit his age, if not older, given Hollywood's reverse aging of late. And the character was NOT that confident around Tripplehorn; more than anything, he was just plain creepy. I liked him in the role and wanted to see more from him, but it didn't really fit that such a character would attract the pretty young wife of the partner's handsome hotshot protege.

reply

I'm going to guess you are male. Seems a bit of wish-fulfillment in there. Women like men who are attractive, full-stop. Just like men like women who are attractive.
