How was the alien sheet effect done?

It was a pretty freaky part when the aliens were doing those wierd experiments on Travis Walton. I still thought the effect was cool though and I thought it would have been better and hot if it was done on a hot female actress like Jessica Alba or Rose McGowan. I would have like to see what they looked like with the sheets over them. Most of all I would have liked to see it done on Kristen Kreuk because I like hearing her try to breath. How was this effect done? Were the reversable fans underneath the sheets or something? I heard this story is different than what the real Travis Walton described.
