Does Dennis not know 'play on words'?

Because I noticed in that part with him and Swithblade Sam, when he says "didn't I ask you to shut your yap?" And then Dennis says "What's a yap?" And he said "I can't shut my mouth because my nose is stuffy". Is it that, he just doesn't know expressions, is that the thing?

He's only five so he's a bit young to understand what it means to play on words.

What Cosmic_quest said.

Here's a word you'll see most IMDB users don't know about, no offense: Opinion.

Maybe he has Asperger's. Just kidding, kids that young don't understand expressions.

But ironically he knows some expressions and uses them but takes others literally. Well I think they can easily understand them once you tell them what each expression means while a child on the autism spectrum will have troubles grasping it.
