It has been years and I have come in part way through the movie but do they explain what happens to his wife? One minute he is explaining that she is banging on his ice cube and then he is quite willing to have sex with bullock's character!

Lenina tells him after he has been thawed out that his wife's 'fire was extinguished in the earthquake of 2010'. She died.
