I actually thought this movie had potential, but the problems and plot-holes that everyone has pointed out are extremely unfortunate.
The main problem was the "Mary-Sue-ing" of Nick, and hence turning Adrien into a one-dimensional "obsessed nut".
I've written this on another thread, but being intellectually gifted often comes at the price of delayed social and emotional development. Teen girls are a nightmare at the best of times, but with these conditions added in, you've got trouble!
There was ample opportunity to explore Adrien's pathology...which would would have turned an otherwise predictable "good guy - bad guy" psychological thriller, into something of substance, but for whatever reason, this wasn't done.
The ending is downright ridiculous, and honestly, by that stage I was rooting for Adrien. Nick is clearly an idiot who (as bron-tay) pointed out, failed to save the ridiculous number of messages on his answering machine to show Adrien's parents, nor show them the creepy shrine under the guest house, nor keep his door locked after taking such drastic security measures.
You'd think by the wasp incident, he'd just go to a motel or something...but no...he's still there with his door unlocked, waiting for something bad to happen.
In addition, we get this marked jump from the believable actions of a highly intelligent (albeit emotionally disturbed) teenage girl, culminating in the fake sexual assault charge...to completely uncharacteristic, and outright stupid moves on Adrien's part.
I mean, she already had him lined up ready to be jailed...and could have easily used her time at the house to destroy/hide evidence of her stalker-like behaviors, but instead ties up her "best friend", goes medieval on Nick's arse with an iron bar, paradoxically attacks her dad for attacking Nick, and ends up in a locked psych ward.
Geeez! Really?
I mean, credit where it's due. Adrien is pretty much an evil-genius. Those kind of amateur moves at the end make no sense, and if the writers were THAT hell-bent on Nick "winning", they should have done it in a court of law setting...and actually USED that whole secret diary thing as exonerating evidence, instead of merely a pretext to get the required characters into the same place (the main house) at the end of the film.
Someone with an objective eye should remake this and use this same basic storyline to make a film that lives up to it's potential.
