Where does the story take place? I know it has to be somewhere northeast because 'the coast' is mentioned...?
i.e.s of possible settings
-Pennsylvania: Nick wearing a Penn State sweater
-New Jersey: Nick writing a news article about Robert Levansky, mentions New Jersey
It was too hard to see in the film, but I'm sure the letters Adrian wrote to Nick towards the end of the film had an address on it.

The movie is supposed to take place in Seattle, Washington.

I thought it was Seattle also. The skyline shown in the beginning of the movie is clearly that of Seattle as the Space Needle can be seen in it, and the map Nick is looking at while he is driving is also of the Seattle area.
