After he knocks the clothes hangers, she hesitates for a moment with her back to him, taking a second or two to come to a conclusion that someone is in her closet and that it could only be one person - Nick. This was probably the most damning moment for him (well, along with the brief reciprocation of her kiss at the lighthouse) as in her mind, he hid in there on purpose just to perve on her cos he "likes" her...when really, he just panicked when he heard her get out of the shower and didn't know how he could explain why he was in her room. And why was he in her room? He was returning a book when curiosity took over I believe, about the roots of this strange girl and the display of her privileged upbringing. (Speech over, lold)

Actually he was in the room because he thought she took the picture of him and his Grandpa. He thought the house was empty, so he went in looking for it. She comes out of the shower and he hides int he closet. He steps back and bumps into the hangers, which she hears and knows he is there. (Thinking he came in to watch her undress)
He never borrowed a book, he just uses that as an excuse when Cliff (her dad) catches him in the house. She knows he was there because she figures that he used the book excuse to cover why he was in the house, so she covers for him.
