Summer / Winter Games

So the main guy fails to qualify doing the 100m sprint which is a summer olympics event so instead does the bobsleigh which is a winter olympics event.

How does that work?

Didn't he think he would be too old for the next Summer Olympics?

How does that work?
The film has dodgy timelines, but I think we're supposed to gather that the 3 failed to qualify in trials that occurred around 1986 - 87 and then they turned around and went for the February 1988 Winter Olympics. IRL, I doubt very much whether they would have had the trials that far out from the summer Olympics. 🐭

You're right, they didn't hold qualifiers so far out in advance. That's because the Summer/Winter Games in alternating two-years is relatively new. Up until 1992 (inclusive) the Summer Olympic Games and the Winter Olympic Games were held in the same year, although in different cities.

I'm surprised more people don't know or remember this. It makes a great trivia question to remember!

In 1988, the year in which this movie was set, the Summer and Winter Olympics were held in the same year. In fact, it had been like that for most of the Games' history. 1992 was the last year in which they were held in the same year. It's a relatively new thing that the games are split.

Well done on the further clarification pf! Even if no one else does, I promise to remember 1992 for any future quiz nights.🐭

As was pointed out prior to 1992 summer and winter Olympic Games were held the same year 1984 was Los Angeles and Sarajevo.

Part of the reason for separation was to accommodate the Broadcast networks schedule so they wouldn't have to preempt their schedules twice in a 4-5 month period.

Like with a professional sports today it's all about accommodating television.
