a somewhat connection to Harry Nilsson's The Point Album from 1971 ? Especially in particular the Remulakian's Leader wearing the exact same crown on his head ( or should I say " cone / point " lol ) . I wonder if this was the inspiration for the Conehead characters on SNL and this movie in the first place . If so both were so cool and have always been my favorites since my childhood . Did anyone else here see the connection to this as well ?
I so agree WarpedRecord Harry Nilsson was one of the top geniuses of the music world . He has been so missed these last few years by folks like us who enjoyed his music over the years . At least we still have what he left behind for us to enjoy forever . The Point Album was my very first HN discovery back in the 1970's . It was my absolute childhood favorite ( and it still is now lol ). Next time you watch this movie again look real closely at the Remulakian's King Leaders crown . It's completely uncanny from the pictures in The Point's Album pics of the King . It totally had a " Whoa moment " when I first saw it lol . My wild guess is that the writers might have done this on purpose for us fans to take notice on lol . Thanks WarpedRecord for this very kind compliment from you and for your reply .
The more I think about it, the more I'm sure the Remulakian crown must be an homage to Harry Nilsson and "The Point." This film has a lot of pop-culture obsessives behind it, so it can't be a mere coincidence. It's been speculated that the original "Coneheads" skit on SNL was inspired by "The Point."
Harry Nilsson was also a big part of my childhood in the '70s. Songs like "Me and My Arrow" and "Good Old Desk" had a whimsical nursey-rhyme feel, very much in keeping with the type of pop music that would play on shows like "The Partridge Family" and "Grammar Rock." I vagely remember "The Point" airing on TV, but I'm not sure I saw it then. I did rented it ssveral tims afterward and now own a copy.
A few weeks ago, I watched excellent the documentary "Who Is Harry Nilsson (and Why Is Everybody Talkin' About Him)." Have you see it? I'd highly recommend it, but I have to say that ultimately I found it very depressing because he was extremely self-descructive with his attitudes and habits. That's not to take away from his musical legacy, which is solid. Check it out if you haven't: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0756727/
Thanks WarpedRecord for the documentary movie recommendation of Harry Nilsson . I will be looking out for it one of these fine days . I'm very glad to read here that I'm not the only one who adored this fine treasure of a story " The Point " as a child too . The songs to that story just stays with us forever in our hearts and minds too . Thanks again WarpedRecord for your reply .
You're very welcome, Ms-Zanadu. Harry Nilsson was a crucial to getting me interested in music as a child, and my love of his genius only continues to grow as an adult.
I hope you appreciate the documentary – I'm not sure you can "enjoy" it because it's quite grueling in spots. As was the case with many musicians, Harry had his share of vices and financial difficulties that ultimately took their toll on the music. But the film also serves as a reminder of his talent from the musicians who knew him best.
