Is it possible to get the original cut? The movie ends very odd and it should have been much longer so the audience would kow what happened to Miklo and La Onda.
A new dvd-release would be great.

shareYou have to get the director's cut to see the full version. I didn't even know one existed for years, I was surprised to see new scenes when I finally got the editor's version on DVD. If you haven't seen the original hit attempt on Smokey, or Popeye offering to help Miklo get into the Onda council, then you haven't seen the full version.

I don't know exactly, but I would say it's b/t 3-5. It's nothing that really moves the story forward, just some extended scenes and a different death for Doc.
There's definitely no "official" 5 hr version... But I'd definitely be surprised if one, in any form, is available.

I grew up watching this movie and i seriously remember watching a version where benjamin bratt had a girlfriend the entire movie. In the directors cut dvd, she is never shown. There is a lot of missing stuff in the directors cut dvd.

their are 2 scenes on the back of the dvd cover that do not appear in the film and i thought i remember some extra scenes shown in the trailer. which leads me to believe that their is more footage that was filmed. hope that they rerelease this in the future in a special edition. this is the only 3 hour movie i can watch over and over again. would love to watch an even longer version.

It may exist, as a workprint in a warehouse somewhere, but if it does, it has never leaked.
Don't expect more than literally a few worthy minutes of new material in it, however. If the long version does exist, it's apparently a first cut. Remember that a 5-hour long *first cut* is not a 5-hour long *director's cut*. If this is a first cut, it's much less likely to be like e.g. the long cuts of "Apocalypse Now" or "Waterworld", with literally half an hour of new scenes, and more like the first cut of, e.g., "Creepshow", with much of the additional two hours probably consisting of little more than alternate takes and prolongued versions of sequences that are already in the movie.
The Director's cut has a different death for BGA's leader.. and a few extra scenes.. Though I seem to remember the original version having subtitles in some parts and a different ending where it goes into a flashback of them being teenagers again posing for a family picture...

Wow! it seems there's various cuts of this unheralded classic! I personally have only seen 2. I still have yet to see the director's cut. The two versions i saw was the European UK version which had slight cuts like when Paco pulls out his butterfly knife on the hilltop. You don't see him flip it open. I then saw the South American DVD version which is a minute or two longer. No new scenes, but extended, like when Miklo goes to San Q and he looks up at the tiers, stuff like that. But the only main difference is Bonafide's death. The South American, and probably the US version, is more graphic than the UK version. You see the the pole go right through Bonafide's neck, whereas in the UK it only has sounds that reference Magic stabbing him in the back.
From what ive been reading is that the director's cut is about ten minutes longer, but judging from the trailer i think there is even a longer cut. but then again, it's probably just material that ended on the cutting room floor and they used it to make the trailer. That's what usually happens.

Nevertheless it would be nice to se what a 5 hour version would be like. There´s a lot of threads to be followed. The movie just ends up in nothing and it seems the director had to cut a lot just to make the movie shorter than it was intended too.

Man, how I'd love to see the 5 1/2 hour cut. It must exist in some form otherwise I don't imagine it would be listed. However I'm sure the studio had it cut due to fear of the length of the film.
But that is what makes this film amazing. The Director's Cut is three hours long, yet it doesn't feel long at all. The time flies by and you don't want the film to end. I was totally immersed in the world this film presented.
I do hope that one day, maybe a Blu-Ray release will give us the epic "Vato Loco" cut. 5 and 1/2 hours of engrossing material.
I do agree that Conti did a fantastic job with the score. Great stuff!

A: La Onda.. Because he risked a lot by destroying the "Cheap times" with those grenades.. He risked the BGA and Onda war.. Although later on they went to war anyway.. only in a more strategic way..

A: He was acting.. Nobody else knew they (Miklo and Magic) killed Montana and if they did they would have killed them..

Don't know exactly how true this is but, I was talking to a guy a while back. He had said he bought The Anniversary Edition at Best Buy. He had said in the this version it shows the strangling of Smokey and the killing of Carlos. It had the scenes with Paco's girlfriend. I tried looking for it but I have yet to find it.

all uk prints are the cut versions the US version runs at least 10 mins longer but there is also a 300+ work print but i dont know anything about it, you could search a torrent site maybe for a fan edit

I don't know if there is a 5.5 hour cut. Two things I read the script at the Beverly Hills library about fifteen years ago, though I don't remember the script's length I do remember that the script was nowhere near 330 pages. I don't even think that it was 200 pages. Around that time I had a job working as a transcriber for Taylor Hackford's former assistant and she said that the segment I read in the script about Paco's romance with a Chicano police Captain's daughter in fact was filmed but didn't make it into the film. Which is interesting because in the VHS cover stills from their romance is on there but nothing is included in Hackford's 180 minute cut.

he said that version dosen't exist...but im sure it in the vaults
