yeah i was wondering if anyone else notice when miklo talked to like a white person he would just talk like a normal white person with no accent but when he was talking to a mexican or when he was with a bunch of mexicans he tried to talk all like a mexican gangster and had that accent?
shareA lot of people do that in real life, though. You wouldn't speak to your college professor or someone handling the hiring for a certain job the same way you speak to your friends.

I agree with what you're saying. The way he changed his accent depended on who he was talking to. When he's talking to Bonafide he trys to speak like him. When he's talking to Big Al and the dirty cop he speaks like they do.
shareBeing "real" matters when you're an 18 year old kid. When you grow up, being happy matters more. I speak to those whom I respect WITH respect, and speak casually to friends in a casual manner. It is as "real" as it gets. To act like a child in front of those you respect is just that: childish.

The way that Miklo would switch up the way he talks demonstrates his ability to fit in with both whites and Mexicans, which is what initially persuaded Montana to recruit Miklo in La Onda…
shareOk in regards to the original poster the latest post is on point... Miklo basically offered up his being white to get into "white" places the mexicans cant get into, so he would be accepted by Montana and Onda. So when he was around Al in the kitchen, Al would probably of beat his ass if he talked like he was a mexi gangster. So to call it bein a poser is so way off point. its called surviving in atomosphere that reguires careful manuvering amongst certain people.
And in regards to the other posts about people talking differently to different people... I could bet that everyone does it. Its just a subconcience action. Its almost human nature to want to blend into your surroundings, granted if you are in some place that you have never been before well then yah you will stand out until you get comfotable and slowly fall into simialar patterns. I mean the different dialects around the world can atest to that. Say for example myself I live in Northern Minnesota, if I were to move to say to Texas or Arkasas I think after some time I would start to talk with a southern draw, but when i would come home to visit i think i would revert to old way of speaking. And i think most of us are guilty of talking to babies, that usually do not speak, we talk in so called baby voices. Its not that we are being fake its that we are speaking to people in the way we see that they would best understand us. So to call a person fake or a poser is not in the true revalance of human nature.
I agree with this. My father in law is Navajo and has a very strong accent. He also worked for IBM as tech support. I noticed when he picked up the calls, his accent would almost disappear. Now when he is talking to his sons, it's a different story! I'm from a reservation and we also have an accent. I work in the city and noticed that when speaking to my bosses, I tend to not speak in that accent as much than if I was speaking to someone from the same place as me.

No different than when you were a teen and you spoke to your parents in a completely different tone than you did with your buddies.
Miklo had life experiences that taught him to "do as Romans when in Rome"..especially since he was bi-cultural.
The guy who played Miklo did an interesting job, the only other time I've seen him onscreen was in Money Talks as the loan shark that Chris Tucker owes money to.
yeah it was interesting, and it shopws chapas character was a fake.
if he had just talked to the hoodrats with 'homes' 'chico' 'ese' and was proper talking to the whites/authorities thats ok.
but the whole accent change was what made him a bad character, but was cool in the context of the movie.

shareUh NO this is a dumb answer and isn't what the OP is even referring to. The OP is talking about how he CHANGES his ACCENT when he's around the whites or mexicans - not the tone in which he speaks. The fact he can't stick with one accent regardless of who he's around means he's a poser or "unreal".
I noticed this too. My only explanation would be that the only time Miklo "talked white" was when he was in front of the parole board and was probably in an attempt to sound educated and not ignorant and that way gain his freedom. His real accent was Chicano, other than that. Another possibility is that maybe he really "talked white" but refrained from doing so in order to fit in with the Vatos Locos and later with La Onda.
