It's best if you come to 'Army Of Darkness' as a newbie...
I recall going to see "Army Of Darkness" in 1993 when it was released. I had done my homework, and knew that there were two previous entries in the "Evil Dead" series that had preceded it. It had been my intention to watch those before coming to see "Army Of Darkness" to bring myself up to speed, but wasn't able to find the time to do it. In retrospect, I'm glad that I didn't. Going into "Army Of Darkness" completely cold, all I had to go on was the summation of the story so far at the beginning of the film. From there, the film started in earnest, and I lost count of how many times I burst out laughing during this film. And trust me, I wasn't the only one in the theater openly guffawing at the silliness and fun of the film. I had no idea who this "Ash" guy was or how he gotten to this point; nor did I care. I was just having too good of a time to worry about the backstory.
Later on, I did manage to sit down and watch the original "Evil Dead" along with it's sequel, "Evil Dead 2:Dead By Dawn". While I admit they were well made films, they just didn't have the fun or rewatchability for me as "Army Of Darkness". Had I seen the earlier two films first, I might not have made the time to see "Army." In this regard, it's a better thing thing to come into "Army Of Darkness" without having seen the earlier films, and therefore not having the expectations of getting more of the same.
I've seen a lot of people arguing here on IMDB regarding "Army" and it's quality as opposed to the other two entries, and it's my belief that taken on it's own, "Army" can and is more enjoyable then the sum of the parts of the "Evil Dead" saga.
Just my two cents.
What do YOU guys think?
