I own the "Screwhead Edition" DVD and a (rather low quality) video recording of the TV cut. I will not buy another edition unless it includes the director's cut with Raimi/Campbell's commentary AND the TV cut.

Originality needs a reboot.

To me, the Television cut is THE definitive version of Army of Darkness. It's the one I had watched on the USA network back in the '90s when I was a kid. This was long before I knew about alternate versions of films and the internet was still a relatively new thing. So imagine my surprise and dismay when I saved up some cash and bought the first of several special editions of Army of Darkness on VHS. My reaction was much like Ralphie Parker's with the Little Orphan Annie secret decoder message in A Christmas Story. Felt A little cheated and ripped off there.

So a few years later when the Director's Cut was announced, I rejoiced. This was it...nope. It's funny how scenes that look just fine in the Television cut look horrible in the Director's cut. Did Raimi and co. just not have access to this footage? After the Screwhead edition, I finally gave up on the Television cut ever getting a Blu-ray/dvd release. Hopefully Shout Factory has finally gotten it right, but I'm not holding my breath.

I know what you mean! My own introduction to AoD was when I first saw it on USA's "Up All Night" (of all places!) back in 1997! When I first got it on video, I was disappointed and perplexed as to why it was about 10 minutes shorter, with some of my favorite scenes/dialogue changed/missing.

It's funny how scenes that look just fine in the Television cut look horrible in the Director's cut.

Anchor Bay was too cheap to process and finalize the scenes or buy them from whatever company finished them for the TV edit. They just crudely spliced them in with the theatrical cut.

I mainly want the director's cut for Raimi/Campbell's commentary.

I actually bought a used copy of the director's cut from Suncoast for something like $30. It was supposed to include the theatrical cut as well, but the disk was missing. Wasn't about to pay $30 for a substandard version of the movie, especially when one of the disks was missing, so after listening to the commentary track, I took it back and got a refund.

Originality needs a reboot.

The television edit is available in a boxset called Army of Darkness Definitive Edition - it was released in Australia but can be imported from Ebay.

Gimme some (3 Disc) sugar, baby.

Yes they announce it is going to be 3 discs.

I trust the extended cut isn't going to look like complete ass in this set?

I can't wait and already pre-ordered it. I love this film
and still have the Boomstick Edition DVD set and the
Screwhead Edition Blu-ray.

Just got this in the mail from Shout Factory yesterday.......the poster isn't that big of a deal. Feels like magazine-quality paper that is folded over twice so you have seams going lengthwise and widthwise. Probably not something you would get framed and hang on a wall so whatever.

But it's very cool getting it over 2 weeks in-advance of the street date......fantastic blu ray release.

reply

Hey will be able to do a review of the tv version. I heard from some one else that got the blu ray that there were some problems with the film (slow playback).

reply

I'll put it on tonight and let you know soon......already watched the regular North American cut and had no issues. I'm not a super videophile guy but picture looked really good to me. A few shots might have some grain here and there, but at it doesn't look like they used any excessive DNR (if any). So at least to a pretty normal viewer like myself, I was very happy with it.

Only got through some of the brand new "making of" featurette with brand new interviews that includes Bruce Campbell, Marcus Gilbert (who played Lord Arthur), Richard Grove (who played Duke Henry), and a little Ted Raimi......very entertaining.

reply

Ok so I watched some of the TV version on the new blu ray.......it is on disc 3 which features the international cut of the film (disc 1 is standard North American theatrical and disc 2 is director's cut) - the TV version is considered one of the "bonus" features. So if you put the disc in and hit 'play' - it will show the international cut. You have to go to the "bonus" section to play the TV version.

The TV version features a "full screen" 1.33:1 ratio so the black bars are on the side of the screen. It is NOT high-definition and has the feeling like it was ripped from a VHS.

I never watched the film on TV growing up so I have nothing to go by. It even has the edited language with noticeable dubbing ("jack and spit"). I highly doubt this would be anyone's preferred way of watching the film, but it's cool that it's included for anyone who has any sort of nostalgic attachment to watching it on TV growing up.

There is slight playback issues and probably none more noticeable in the few very opening shots when Ash is a slave walking through the desert. But all in all, it's still watchable quality. Just don't think it's going to be anyone's preferred version. Only a fun inclusion for nostalgic people.

reply

Thanks for the reply back. I grew up with the tv version when I was younger. Sad to hear it wasn't given the same treatment as the other versions. Again thank you for the little review.

reply

The picture is amazing on everything not including the TV version that I wasn't expecting to be like each of the cuts transfers from film.

The only real thing is that the theatrical cut is missing a very small section scene where Ash jumps a small stone wall as he is being chased through the woods. But the audio is still there and Scream is looking into it. Some were thinking that the Universal transfer wasn't that great and Scream mixed cuts from the other cuts with it but I don't know.

Funny you mention that. I got an e-mail from Shout! that they're going to correct the problem!:

"In the past few days, thanks to Army of Darkness super fans, it has come to our attention that there is a scene missing from the theatrical cut in our new Blu-Ray release of the film.

We wanted to reach out and thank everyone who wrote us about the issue and for your patience while we've worked on a resolution.

We can now announce that a replacement disc correcting the issue will be ready by early November. We'll have more information about the details of this replacement program soon. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to email us at [email protected]."
