Babylon 5 vs DS9

compare/contrast

Similarities include

Space station
Wormhole/jumpgate
Mysterious enemy (Founders/shadows)
Widespread war

Differences

Warp speed in DS9 / Hyperspace in B5
Peace with telepaths in DS9 / Psi Corps and Rogue Telepaths in B5
Starfleet in DS9 / Earthforce in B5
Regular starfleet officers in DS9 / Rangers in B5

That's all off the top of my head. I personally prefer Babylon 5. Amazing show.

CO's had god like complexes (identities) - Sisko V Sinclair / Sheridan
Both had ships from beginning of third season

For me B5 was the more satisfying story line, at least until the end of the 4th season due to the plot having been laid out prior to the show being produced.

It's true that B5 had the larger story arc planned from the beginning. I don't think anyone involved with DS9 had thought about the Dominion until later. They did a good job of it once it was there, though.

It's quite amazing the story line ended up as coherent as it did. That's 7 seasons flying by the seat of their pants, and at the end it connects beautifully to the beginning.

Compare that to Lost or the final season of BSG (though I still really enjoyed BSG) where it is painfully obvious they had no idea where the show was going and we can all be very happy with the way DS9 turned out.

Here's the best comparison and contrast I've ever seen between the two shows:

Hahaha what a little loser you are. Do you have some rope in your closet?

Isn't the score to the Babylon and DS game, 5 to 9? Hey, if it were the other way around, it would be a Dolly Parton song.

Spenser with an "S", like the poet.

J. Michael Straczynski pitched Babylon 5 to Paramount, but they declined.

Paramount then rushed a similar show in the Star Trek universe to television.

Yes, there are many similarities but not the full story arc of Babylon 5.

I like DS9 more. I will admit part of that has to do with my preference for the Star Trek universe, but DS9 also has the better acting and production values and the differences in story quality are negligible enough that those other factors tip it easily in DS9's favor. Both shows started slow, but once they got going, DS9 had a longer stretch of quality and its last season was a lot better than B5's dull final season.
