Sisko - season 4

In the Way of the Warrior - when Sisko is rushing through the corridors, bald headed... he looked much skinnier than in season 3... also for the remainder of the series he looked more hefty.

Garak is called in to take measurements - and coyly Sisko says that he's lost a bit of weight.

Did anyone else notice his very apparent weight loss at the start of season 4?

Did anyone else notice his very apparent change at the start of season 4? In appearance and as a character. He loses weight, goes bald, grows a beard, and he's notably looser, more flamboyant, and more alive. Not that he was bad in the first three seasons, he was fine in season 3, but retained the stiffness and rigidity he had in seasons 1 and 2. He does get bulkier too. It's weird. His seeming lack of humour in the first two seasons is actually a bit off-putting. Thankfully we had everyone else to balance it out.

reply

To be fair - he got the goatee near the end of season 3.

But he did loosen up a lot near the end of that season too.

reply

Thankfully. He just looks uncomfortable with that rarely varying blank expression in the first two seasons. You can see it in the way he moves and everything in season 4.

reply

I was more shocked at how thin he was at the start of season 4... it's so glaringly obvious.

reply

Indeed. He's so tubby in the first two seasons and for much of season 3. And the way he moves is so damn sly and graceful, those eccentric mannerisms and gestures he does, all that starts around season 4. In seasons 1 and 2 it's like he could barely break a smile, even Dukat remarks "of all the starfleet officers I've know, you seem like the most joyless, and the least vulnerable." In the beginning I think they wanted Sisko to be the tough captain. Picard debated with Q, Sisko just punches him. He's tough right through the series, but I'm glad he warmed up later on. Plus, I love those eccentricities, like when he's questioning the leader of Red Squad in Paradise Lost and his head slides from side to side as he's shouting him down.

I just watched Homefront and Paradise Lost last night... great episodes.

Loved when he reamed out Nog for not wanting to give up the names of Red Squad.

reply

yep, two of my favourites. i love the investigation and conspiracy, and the "you thought i was one of them!" speech.

red squad are such douchebags, as seen in the episode "valiant." horrible episode.

I noticed that Avery Brooks looked a lot skinnier in season 4 too. Don't know if he was trying to loose weight. You can tell by season 6 had put on some weight, which was a good thing.

reply

He seemed more muscular in those later seasons.

reply

You can really tell that his body had changed once again in the 5th season episode Rapture, where he's wearing the Picard (First Contact). The dickie type undershirt makes a rare appearance in DS9, and it shows off the size of Sisko's arms. His face also looks much fuller than it did in season 4.

reply

Brooks was really good at stunts. I think the ONLY time he didn't do stuntwork was when Sisko was hit by the taxi in Far Beyond the Stars.
