It should be the twenty-second century. One of my cinematic pet peeves is and has always been the setting of unreasonable dates for the future. Look at Back to the Future Part 2, Lost in Space, I, Robot, Blade Runner, The Island... all these movies depict super-advanced technology and were set not more than 50 years from when they came out.
I agree that you'd have to get someone with major clout to replace Roy Scheider. I started another thread relating to this topic. As far as mannerisms and screen persona go, my personal choice would be either Sam Neill or Lance Henriksen.
Also, by the time a movie version ever got made, people by and large would be in a way "re-discovering" the show and, except for the die-hard fans, would have forgotten all about it. They'll see an awesome movie and then want to watch the show that inspired it.
Get that finger out of your ear! You don't know where that finger's been!
