Near the end of season 1 and I have to say this. what kind of messed up world is this universe set in?
One world govt. Eating real hamburgers is outlawed... I bet they banned junk food unless it's made of chemicals. What a messed up world? Probably politically correct too by law.
There isn't a single world government. The United Earth/Oceans Organization was created to administer over the oceans - there are a number of land based confederations. (e.g. the North American confederation, which included the United States and built the seaQuest before donating it to the UEO).
It's not so much politically correct as that the world was getting heavily polluted. It's stated in the season 2 pilot that due to rainforest clear cutting, there are a number of atmospheric processing stations simply to ensure everyone has air to breathe. Hamburgers were outlawed because of the methane pollution from cows destroying the ozone. Col. Shraeder (think I spelled that correctly) tried to commandeer the seaQuest to further his pro-ecological agenda. Then there were the anti-whalers who torpedoed a cruise ship by mistake.
The ecological issues combined with undersea territorial squabbles led to the current politics.
Think of the UEO as the UN of the ocean - with teeth.
