I wasn't old enough to watch this show when it was big, what exactly did dustin diamond do in this series? i know what he did in the original and the college years, but what was his role here?

He was Mr. Belding's "personal assistant." You should rent or buy the DVDs just to get a laugh out of the blatantly homoerotic relationship between Screech and Mr. Belding. In Season 3, the two of them work in a candy shop together with pink aprons on! I am not joking!
