Does anyone else think this was a real gem?

I was a kid when all the SBTB episodes were new and running. I never saw the college years episodes until they were on syndication in the afternoons in the late 90's.

I was in college from 2001-2006, and there's no way this short 1 season spinoff accurately represents college life. But for me, that was part of what made it so good. I never really watched all the episodes until I was in college and they only played the College Years on Friday mornings when I didn't have class, and like 4-6 episodes at a time so it only took about a month to see them all from the pilot through the wedding.

While the show doesn't represent reality, it touches on it. For example, you get exposed to your RA/RD, dean, fraternity life, professors, dorm life, struggling in a sport or classes, balancing school/work life, jobs, etc that college kids go through. The show "Undeclared" which was cancelled waaaay to early IMO, and is probably the greatest representation of real college life.

But SBTB CY isn't meant to be real. You've got the main characters of SBTB, in Zack, Slater, and Screech, which in all honesty were the real stars of the original SBTB. Kelly joined them, and I think the show was closer to reality than the high school show. Being someone who was in college at the time and now a graduate, I appreciate a show that takes place in college. It's just slightly more real than the high school shows. Add the increased reality (but knowing it's not meant to be true reality), the better setting for a show in college, and in my opinion, better written episodes and plot lines and I think you have a hit. Without Bob Golic as Mike Rogers the RD and Patrick Fabian as Lasky the professor, the show wouldn't have the chemistry it has.

To me, it's just Saved by the Bell, in a better setting, with a better cast, with a slightly more sophisticated story and plot lines, and you've got the type of show that appeals to a lot of people. No, it didn't have the drinking, smoking, drugs, sex, etc that prevalent in all colleges, but there's lots of kids there to study, have fun with friends, and participate in a party or two but are more reserved in their social like is shown in SBTB College Years. I drank and went to quite a few parties, but also probably lived closer to the lifestyle portrayed in the show. Hanging out with buddies, catching each other for lunch, class, and finding stuff to do at other times. I spent more nights hanging out with friends, playing poker, watching movies, going shopping or out to eat, etc than I did a lot of partying and drinking.

Anyway, I know it's not real, but it's got a great compilation of laughs, situations, settings, and just that hint of reality to a teen comedy show that's gone to college and facing new challenges.

I'm not sure how well it would have lasted in additional seasons, but I know it ended b/c the folks were tired of SBTB and wanted to do something different. Mark-Paul didn't want to be Zack Morris forever, which is the same reason why Elizabeth Berkely and and others left and weren't included- they wanted to do different things.

I own this DVD set and would have loved it if there were extras included and if it included the wedding 'movie'. I'd probably trade in my DVDs of the regular SBTB and CY if they came out with a "Complete Series" boxset and could get the cast members and special guests and stuff for some commentary and give us some good extras.

I still catch an episode or two on Friday mornings when I'm getting ready for work, and every few months like to pop some popcorn, order a pizza, and watch the DVD set from start to finish, imagining myself and thinking about the characters at CAL U with Rogers as the RA and fresh out of high school again with the cast trying to navigate my way through freshman year.

omg wat?!!!! SBTB isn't real?!!

I don't know why TCY didnt go down that well with viewers. I mean it wasn't a patch on SBTB Seasons 1-4 but it was good considering they'd grown up. It would have been great if all of the gang (inc. Lisa & Jessie) could've made it but still. The best thing about it was revisiting the Zack/Kelly long-time romance and that it still worked, and this time it was for good. The two of them getting married was the perfect ending, I always thought they were meant to be

Chandler: on second thoughts, gum would be perfection. (thinks) Gum would be PERFECTION??

The only problem with The College Years was that it was missing Lisa and Jesse from the show and also the writers in ways changed the characters from SBTB show. When you change something about characters it is not going to work. I liked SBTB because I was in high school at the time and use to watch them on Saturday morning on NBC. After I graduated about a year later was when they had them go off to college. I am pretty sure Lisa and Jesse wanted to move on and do different work that is more than likely why they turned down the job of doing the college years. Then Kelly comes back onto the show and it helped it out some but she was trying to get on 90210 or looking for other jobs to do. I just felt the show lacked the chemistry of what Saved By The Bell had.

"The College Years" failed for the simple reason that it was competing against primetime shows, and most of the audience had never watched Saturday morning television, so to that audience it was a new show. The primetime viewers (including me) decided to watch other stuff instead.

As for most-realistic college show, I have to go with Cosby's "Different World" series. Especially the first season. It's not perfect, but it closely mirrors my own experience in college and later Penn State University. College might be different now (especially with cellphones and other gadgets), but Different World showed what college was like circa 1985 to 2000.

BTW I used to watch "Good Morning Miss Bliss" (Saved by the Bell, season 0) back when it was new. That too was rather realistic for a junior-high class of 1986, which is one of the reasons I enjoyed it. It reminded me of my own experiences.

All I liked was the theme song. I didn't really enjoy this. Maybe I was a kid like you! 2002-2006 were my college years.

Wow! You have taken the words right out of my mouth! LOL! I completely agree with pretty much everything you said! I went through my college years never drinking or partying and I was close friends to my RD one year, and I can probably relate more to the gang in TCY, than when they were in high school. I loved the whole SBTB series, but TCY I think I enjoyed the most. I just recently got TCY on DVD and I just know that I will watch these episodes over and over. I also bought the Wedding In Las Vegas movie on DVD, so I have that too to watch after the series. I'm glad there's more people like you out there who appreciates something for the goodness and fun of it and not just all the realistic qualities that there should have been.

I LOVE this show. Just as good as the original, sometimes even better. The characters change and act more realistic in this one, and it works, unlike Jesse's "I'm so excited!" scene in the original show.

No Friends came out 1 year later.

In fact, if I recall correctly, Friends was the direct replacement for SBTB College Years. NBC needed something to fill that slot and Friends was what they picked.

I thought it definitely deserved more than one season.

I remember being quite into this show around the early 00's.

It was a guilty pleasure of mine. Wish it went on longer as well... Always a fun surprise when I catch it on TBS- I'm usually in a hotel room on vacation, coincidentally.
I remember way back reading that Tiffani-Amber Thiessen was excited because the show's wardrobe budget was bigger than SBTB. Watching it, I can see how. The clothes were perfectly early 90's- one of my favorite fashion eras!
