It still tickles me how long Sheffield waited to get with Fran

So Sheffield I guess finds Fran attractive but decided to make her his nanny instead for about 5 or so years. Then he finally ask her out or they get involved in the 4th year. I know this is TV but if this was real life I'm sure Sheffield would have been with Fran after about 1.

If it happened too fast, the show would end. A show with them married isn't that interesting.

Yeah I agree the show did build some suspense and kept you watching waiting for Max to ask Fran out or marry her. I think it was better that way to be honest imagine if they married in season 2 or started dating the show would have probably been boring after awhile.

Unfortunately, they can't seem to successfully do shows like that anymore where it keeps your interest of suspense of whether or not the people will get together or not. Even though you knew they probably would, people were a bit more patient in waiting especially since the show held your interest long enough without them getting married until towards the end.

They don't do shows right these days and too many people want instant shipping. They are only interested in the romance or love triangles and not other stories. You pretty much want the show over with by the second season or at least the end of it. They're now mainly doing a movie story and trying to stretch it out over several seasons and adding silly gimmicks to keep people who go for gimmicks.

I know right. I noticed that with today sitcoms it doesn't leave you on the edge of your seat or hoping that such and such end up together. When I go back and watch The Nanny the writers did do it right by making Fran and Sheffield marry in the 5th season.

Like it has been said, the show was about suspense and the 'will they/won't they' theme. Maxwell's hesitating even became a running joke in the later seasons.
On a psychological point of view, I think Maxwell's behaviour could also be explained by the fact he was a widower. He obviously hesitated in marrying again, introducing a new mom to his kids, and possibly lose his indepence as a bachelor. He needed a little time to adjust to the idea.
