Topanga's internship in New York...the writers were clearly high

Watching the episode now where Topanga tells Cory she got an internship at a prestigious NYC law firm...and a scholarship to NYU law school...and the firm wants her to work for them after she graduates law school.

At this point, she's a college freshman. She hasn't even taken any PRE-law classes. She hasn't done a day's worth of legal work. She hasn't even done a day of her internship. And yet the firm wants TO HIRE HER FULL-TIME AT THEIR FIRM AFTER SHE GRADUATES LAW SCHOOL IN 7 YEARS.

WTF?

You know something I was thinking the same thing after watching this episode I totally agree with you

Yeah realism was never BMW's strong point.

there are no pre law classes

this is a test

Pre-law is a major in some colleges and encompasses classes like political science, government, history, English, economics, and so on. So while there aren't "pre-law" classes per se, there are classes in the pre-law major/concentration.

Well, she's actually just finished her sophomore year.

She hasn't even taken any PRE-law classes.
Well, we don't actually know that. We don't know what Topanga's major was. Maybe she was pre-law this whole time. None of them ever had a stated major, beyond the implication that Shawn had gone to Pennbrook to study photography that got kind of ditched.

Still, yeah, it was obviously like... they wanted everyone to be done with college to end the show but the ages didn't add up so they just... tried to pretend. Or something.

Freshman, sophomore, doesn't matter. The point is that a law firm is not going to give you an internship and a guaranteed job when you graduate when you haven't even finished your Bachelor's degree. Columbia also doesn't grant law school scholarships to underclassmen, if at all (I can't say for sure).

not all lawyers are courtroom criminal trial lawyers.

she could be a public defendant [Christine Sullivan from night court] or a real estate lawyer. or a family lawyer.

there was also a reality court show that was based on families, although it was cancelled. the judge was amazing. judge penny was her name and custody disputes and kids suing their parents for freedom came up often. and she didn't just say: judgment for whomever... she always said 'we're gonna fix this' meaning that she was willing to create and discuss compromises with all parties -- even children.

people have got to stop thinking of lawyers as being pricks.

to be honest, it takes a lot to be a teacher or a nurse... and I don't think topenga would make a good teacher or nurse. with both careers you have to be on ball ALL THE TIME and pay attention ALL THE TIME. if you don't, parents and administrators get pissed and patients are in danger.

Reading the paper can really be depressing. Mr. Dithers fired Dagwood again.

I think you're romanticizing Topanga a bit. She always wanted to get her own way. From her portrayal in Girl Meets World, she's either a business lawyer or possibly a real estate lawyer and a darn good one.

reply

I didn't have any problem with her getting an internship. I had a problem with her moving to New York with Shawn, Cory, Eric, and Cory permanently, and her getting both a law school scholarship and a job from a couple of interviews that were meant for just the internship.

reply

I always hated how Shawn and Eric decided to tag along to New York. It re-established the problem that started in 'War'. The long-lifers(Cory,Topanga,Shawn) always sticking together and the outcasts(Jack,Rachel,Angela) going their separate ways.
