Boy with cape in 'Cory's alternative friends' episode

I might be looking into too much but when Cory asks the boy (Dereck I think his name is)why he's worn a cape since 1st grade he replies "What cape?". Even though I find it funny I've wondered for a while what he means by this. Any guesses or am I thinking about it too much?

I don't think he saw himself in a cape. He wore one the same way others wear a hat. He didn't know or care about the difference.
