Question; Alan's Sporting Goods Store

What became of The Sporting Goods Store that Alan bought and ran with Eric in Season 4? Was he still supposed to be running it off-screen, or didn't they ever say? I think I remember Eric saying that after he graduated college he was going to work there and eventually take over, but he ended up leaving for N.Y. with Cory, Topanga, and Shawn in the series finale. Anybody know? Thanks.

reply

Shawn left a surprise in the store's mailbox. :p

reply

No. That was in season 1 when Alan still worked at the grocery store.

reply

Maybe I should have tacked on the word "again", it was supposed to be a joke. :p

reply

or maybe owlnut could realize a joke when it is written!

In the final season, near the end, there is an episode where Eric was about to graduate and he is trying to figure out what he is going to do, ridiculous situation for a senior in college but whatever, and you see him working in the store during the episode. So obviously he would still have the store or sold it off and retired.

reply

Come to think of it, didn't they all do that? I.E.-Right before they were to graduate, they started wondering what they were going to do moving forward. It's like "Um, what the hell were you all doing for the past 4 years in college?!?"

reply

Yep, it's so stupid. They are graduating after 4 years of college which means a bachelor's and that means they studied something specific. So unless they all got degrees in liberal arts, they should know what they want to do.

reply

Can we stop with the Major bashing?

reply

No, I'm calling stupid BS when I see it. I thought it was incredibly stupid when it originally aired too. I know it's just a TV show so I will give some latitude on certain things but this is too stupid to excuse. Just like anyone who thinks Eric should have adopted Tommy or that Cory and Topanga were right to ask his parents to move into their house after they got married.

reply

Their are a lot of people who graduate college or are about to and are not sure what they want to do with their degree. I agree that they should some idea of what field they want to go into, and on the show, they named off a lot of random things that take different degrees. But hey, it's a tv show.

reply

Not knowing what you want job you want is one thing but no one graduates college with a degree after 4 years without knowing what you want to do, unless you get a degree in something like liberal studies.

People who graduate with a degree in business want to work in some kind of business field.

People who graduate with a degree in music want to do something in music.

These people aren't going to go on to be a veterinarian or a chemist because they have no knowledge of those fields.

reply

this isn't bashing majors in college -- how the show handled college majoring is completely asinine.

you can't spend 4 years in college without choosing a major.

I had to officially chose my major by October 31st of my sophomore year!

Yup, it was ridiculous. People definitely sometimes have some indecision about what to do after graduating, but usually it's like getting more specific about the field they're into. But Jack and Rachel were like "Well, gee, do I want to be a lawyer or a doctor or an engineer? I dunno!" It was weird.

Just like how in the last episode we found out Topanga was planning on going to law school, but we'd never heard that she was interested in that before. It came out of nowhere. Cory wound up being a teacher in GMW, but he'd, of course, have to go to school for that, and as far as we know, he did not. Eric wound up in politics, but no background in Political Science for him - although you can fall into politics a lot of different ways.

The only character who was ascribed a specific course of study is Shawn. The episode where he decides he's going to go to Pennbrook after all, he mentioned going there to do the photography program. But then they never really mentioned him doing photography again, and they introduced writing as his new passion later on although also stopped talking about that (although we saw in Girl Meets World, Shawn did wind up being a photojournalist, combining the two.)

Anyway, yes, after Season 4 when it was a regular set, we never saw Alan's store again until near the end of Season 7. There's probably not an occasion for it to be brought up too much, but I don't think there was any reason to believe he stopped working there. Bear in mind, once they started college, we just really didn't see Alan and Amy as much. They each missed one episode of Season 4. In Season 7, they missed 10 episodes. That's practically half the season.

reply

I dont think it is that ridiculous. There is soooo many people that get degrees and have no idea what they want to do. We dont know what degree he got so he could of had something that had a wide range of options or most likely got a degree in liberal arts with a low range of options. People all the time get degrees and do not have a clue what they want to work in. Colleges have failed at transitioning to the modern era. They need to be training for jobs not teaching theory to check off a list on a course list for a major. Engineering and medical jobs are probably the best at actually training you for a job but even still they arent perfect.
