did anyone else feel sorry for Pete?

It was obvious he wanted to have a good relationship with someone, but he just fell for the wrong woman. Yeah i didn't feel sorry for him by the end because he was a complete psycho by then but in the first half I felt really bad for him.
Like when he's talking to Karen in the beginning at her house and he says he hasnt had a serious relationship and you can see he's craving that.
He was treated unfairly by Michael who threw him out of the club. Pete didn't do anything to him! He hit the guy who broke into Michael and Karen's house and Michael turns on him.

What do you think?

I felt a bit sorry for him. The character reminded me a bit of Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver. You have a guy who's already mentally damaged, and then on top of that his job requires him to be surrounded by "scum" all day, to see the worst that the human race has to offer, and all the years of that had obviously warped his mind. Kudos to Liotta for playing such a reprehensible character and still creating an iota of sympathy for him.

Hey, Karen Carr led Pete on the whole time. Whether it was because she was unhappy in her marriage or she was just too nice, either way gave Pete the backdoor access needed to wreak havoc on this couple's life. This was one of the finer cinematical masterpieces I have viewed in the last 15 years. Ray Liotta's performance as Psycho Officer Pete makes Robert Deniro's characters in "Cape Fear" and "Taxi Driver" look like choir boys. Feedback is encouraged.

Yeah, I agree with you. Ray Loitta played this part to perfection. I felt sorry for him in the beginning too. Did it seem, when Karen and Pete went for coffee, that Karen was flirting with him, or liked him? Seemed that way to me. She had to know he liked her.

Well... Pete is maybe sympathetic at the beginning but he's still a very manipulative, quite evil character who is obsessed with Karen.By the end,I definitely hated him! He had all the characteristics of a pure psychopath, with no remorse whatsoever and a very manipulative, narcissistic side.A psychopath is perfectly able to SIMULATE all the apparent emotions of a gentle, kind human being AS LONG AS HE HAS WHAT HE WANTS.When Pete realized that Michael was an obstacle between him and Karen,it was not long before he took all measures possible to get rid of Michael. The thing is,you just don't see that at the very beginning of the movie.Have you seen the way he treated Karen at the end when he realized that she was not going to obey his desires? I'm sorry, but I didn't quite feel sorry for Pete.

As for Ray Liotta's performance, there's no question about it: he's mesmerizing, incredibly realistic,as always, as Pete. Ray Liotta is simply one of the most underated actor of all for *beep* think he never even got ONE freakin' Oscar nomination for all the wonderful performances he gave to us!

Why feel sorry for him??? I thought Pete was a scumbag liar and here's why ---

1) He tried too hard to get in good with Michael Carr

2) Tried to give Michael a chance to beat up the burgler

3) He threw that blond haired woman out of his car in the middle of nowhere

4) He murdered his partner

5) He murdered Penny

6) He planted drugs in Michaels house

...and the list goes on and on and you guys feel sorry for him???

Exactly! I have always said that she was a pretty bad wife. What is it about Madeline Stowe playing bad wife roles. (Revenge w/Kevin Costner). She was way to damn friendly with the guy and way too disloyal to her husband.

I don't have low self esteem. I have low esteem for everyone else ~ Daria :)

So true! And don't forget China Moon. A unfaithful manipulative seductive wife screwing the heads of two police officers at the same time.

I had NO sympathy for this manipulative nut job from the moment he walked into their house. It was all a game to him. His partner even knew what was up his sleeve early on.
