Michael can prove that Pete was bad because of Pete getting the codeword wrong. If Pete hadn't made the call, then would Mike be prosecuted for killing a cop?

Yes, that's what I think definitely would have happened.
Then there was the body of Penny in the closet.
Pete's prints would be all over her, not to mention there would be no motive for Karen to have killed her. They couldn't even blame Michael for Penny, he was still in jail.

Thanks. I was so caught up in the suspense I forgot about the body!

I think all the characters forgot about the body in the closet, most of all Karen, since she had not mentioned it to her husband. I kind of feel this was a mistake on behalf of the director.

I don't think Karen had time to mention it to Michael.
