For anyone who studies law or law enforcement

I would like to hear from people knowledgeable in the legal system or law enforcement. Can a corrupt cop actually pull off all the crap that was shown in the movie freely in reality? or is there certain parts of the movie that would fail to happen in reality due to legal restrictions? I probably find this movie disturbing not because the cop was a psycho but how much combined power the cop had. And no, I did not see the other psycho cop movies.

As an afterthought, I wonder how Michael would prove that Pete planted the drug evidence after Michael kills Pete in the end. I suppose there is also no way to link Pete to the murder of his partner ever.

If an individual in law enforcement can actually do all this stuff simply to people they don't like, then living in the US would be no different then living in some communist country like China. Just a chilling thought for me.

I can't answer all of your questions, but from what I have noticed and not exactly realistic in the movie is when Pete shoots his partner.
There would have to be gun shot residue on the junkie that Pete claims that fired the gun at his partner. There is also forensics involved at where the gun and blood splatter occurred; so a true investigation would find some plot holes in Pete's testimony.

that shooting scene is pretty badly done by pete. He tried to make it out that it was his partner that shot the criminal not himself. It would have been much easier if he said that he and his partner were speaking to the criminal when the criminal pulled a gun and shot his partner and then so pete shot the criminal trying to flee rather that his partner since his partner was shot round a corner from the criminal so how was he supposed to be able to shoot the criminal??? Look at where both their bodies are when they're dead its impossible for his partner to have been able to shoot the criminal after having been shot

Thanks for the input guys. Its nice to hear some facts and analysis pertaining to how realistic the events in the movie were. I'd still like to hear about how realistic the legal authority of the corrupt cop though (messing with Michael's finances, driving Michael's clients away, the whole fake drug investigation, among the various ways Pete carried out harassing his target). Michael's lawyer seemed very powerless to help.

These two did worse things, for years, and often without even really bothering to cover up their tracks. In fact, Eppolito would openly brag about some of his deeds. He easily framed an innocent man for rape and murder - and got away with it just as easily. It took a few dedicated investigators to take them down 15 years *after* they retired as wealthy men... and these investigators had to deal with a ton of hostility and unresponsiveness from the duo's colleagues.

And these are two of the ones who got *caught*.
