Pete's reaction to Michael
I watched this movie the other night and up until Michael refused to attack the man that held a knife to his wife's throat he and Pete seemed to be getting along just fine. As a matter of fact, I think Pete almost saw a bit of a kindred spirit in Michael and because of that he fulfilled Michael's wish of finding the criminal so he could enact some revenge. My question is what if he had acted on his revenge fantasy and beat the man. Do you think Pete's reaction toward him (with respect to everything that followed in the film) would have been the same? Part of me thinks it would have been different, but another part of me thinks that on some level even when Pete was trying to be friend he still had it in the back of his mind that he was interested in Karen. What do you guys think? Did he have it in his mind all along that he wanted Karen, or would Michael attacking the thief have proved to Pete that he was a capable protector and then left him alone.
