What would you have done in Michael's shoes?

Forget about the whole "Pete being a real psycho" thing. If a police officer, who seemed like a good guy and who was starting to become a friend, brought you to the middle of nowhere to confront the man who had held a knife to your loved one's throat, what would you have honestly done? Would you be like Michael and do the right thing in the end? Or would you take the officer up on the opportunity to deliver a little payback?

I think I'd be more inclined to go after the guy during the trial or when the break in actually happened, than the situation Pete put Michael in.

There was just something about the whole set up. As much as I'd want to get my hands on him, just sitting there like that all pathetic, I don't think I'd do it.

Indeed. Pete caught the intruder who threatened to slash Michael's wife's throat and how does Michael thank him? If anyone spoke to me the way Michael spoke to Pete in the nightclub, after I'd done my best to help them and put their safety concerns to rest, I'd rip their head off on the spot (ok, that's an exageration, but you get my drift)

Michael was an absolute *beep* in this film, even telling his wife that he didn't care what she thinks, and to "knock it off". I was rooting for Pete to smash the hell out of him at the end.

It wasn't just the cop's crazy behavior beating up the criminal, mostly it was his obvious sexual advances towards Russell's wife that made him react like that. First grabbing her intimately around the waist right in front of Russell right after the burglary (which Russell let slide), then a bunch of other blatant indicators culminating with the cop making those lewd sexual comments about her "sweet p***y" or something as he beat up the burglar. It became undeniably clear that the cop wanted his wife. Maybe he could have handled it better, but he was justifiably pissed off I think. And no matter how he handled it, it wouldn't have mattered anyway since as we saw the cop was an insane psychopath.

If the burglar continued to have an F you attitude, then I might have taken up the offer to beat him up. But they purposefully made the burglar out to suddenly be humble, likeable, and non-violent. That's pretty far from reality, but in that case I would have done like Russel's character and passed on harming him. If you aren't going to beat him to death, then it isn't wise to beat him at all, because then he will have a vendetta against you and your family and probably return later for payback
