English Bob Theory

English Bob is NOT British. He's a fraud that uses an English accent to increase his credibility and stature as a gunman. My evidence for this comes from the two lines that he speaks as soon as he sees Bill. " I'll be *beep* fried eggs" and " Little Bill. But I thought you was um, well I thought that you were dead." During these 2 lines, Bob's accent drops at the fried eggs comment and picks back up after the "um" when he corrects himself to say "were" instead of was.
This is suggests that seeing Bill caused him to drop his ruse momentarily.

I didn’t catch anything in the movie that would have suggested he wasn’t English.

reply

Well you're nearly right. He does put on an accent but he is English.
Most of his dialogue is delivered in an upper class "rich English accent" the idea as you rightly suggest is to increase his credibility and give the impression of being a member of the British aristocracy, hence the book title "Duke of death" but like the book itself all is not as it seems.
In the lines that you notice the accent drops he lapses into a lower class cockney\London type accent which suggest a more common upbringing.

reply

The actor is an Irishman... not an Englishman. The accent that comes out is neither Irish nor British

reply

You do realize he is an actor right?

The actor is playing the part of an Englishman that's why he is called English Bob and he speaks with an English accent.

So you're saying Clint Eastwood hired an Irish actor to impersonate an American impersonating an Englishman. That is rich.

He killed sixteen Czechoslovakians. Guy was an interior decorator.

reply

His accent when he’s leaving town is totally different to the one he used before though, which I thought was a great touch, from upper class aristocracy to low class cockney, another show of how his facade had been lifted.

reply

Yep. That was a first class low-rent rant. Harris was brilliant in this. Wish English Bob had more scenes.

I wish the film in general had been longer, every time I watch it, it just flies by, I could have spent a further three hours watching these characters.

Sign of brilliant writing, directing and acting.
