Twin Peaks: One and the Same

A fantastic clarification of the relationship of the Dwarf to the Giant and the Black Lodge:

What was that shadow that passed across the background of the original Red Room dream sequence? Is it really the planet Saturn? Do you agree with the author's conclusion about Saturn and Jupiter's relationship to the Dwarf and the Giant? Is there anything you would add to it?

reply

I like the theory of Saturn and the connection between the Dwarf and the Giant. However, maybe the visual of the object flying behind the curtain was intended to be that of an owl cruising the woods at night, or maybe a veiled reference to Jacques's mynah bird who witnessed Laura's last night at the cabin.
Back when this scene first aired - most viewers interpreted the image as that of a bird in flight. But the planetary idea has merit too. Hmm.

"One and the same." Means the Giant and the waiter.

From your point of view, Kimmo, that's what the phrase "one and the same" means. From the author's point of view, he laid out a good case that the phrase could signify something else. After all, Leland and BOB and Cooper and BOB weren't "one and the same" even though BOB used them as his vessels.

If "one and the same" applies to vessels and their Lodgian hosts, then why did Cooper have a separate and distinct Doppelganger in the Black Lodge when it was BOB who would be possessing him? On that same note, Leland had a doppelganger in the Lodge--although we never met the normal Leland there, unless you count the time in FWWM that he walks into the Lodge unconsciously as BOB's vessel.

Bottom line, authoritatively stating something in a David Lynch film could only mean one thing is probably incorrect and more of a matter of opinion and personal interpretation than literal one-to-one correlation.

regarding Leland's doppelganger - I do know there is the Leland that shares a laugh with Coop's doppelganger in the final episode...but what of the Leland that says, "I never killed anybody"? Wouldn't that be 'normal' Leland? My memory isn't so good as to whether or not the eyes on that Leland and the aforementioned Leland were the same.

IIRC he had them doppelganger eyes and was definitely much more sinister than the real Leland.

My name is a killing word.

reply

Yes, I took it as Leland trying to mess with Dale's head. Dale never really accepted that Leland voluntarily killed his daughter, he preferred to believe it was BOB and only him. So I took evil-eyed Leland telling him that as sarcasm.

reply

In my eyes, it's doppelganger Leland making fun of his victim, the real Leland.

reply

Agreed.

Plus, I'm still not sure if it was Leland or BOB who killed Jacques.

The Leland that says 'I did not kill anybody' was the doppelgänger. People interpret it in different ways, but for me I see the doppelgänger being sincere, he didn't kill anybody. It was the real Leland being possessed by Bob.

From what we've seen in the black lodge, There are the original selves, Dopplegangers, and then the original selves can be possessed by spirits (Mike, Leland, The old man waiter??). At least, thats what I've gotten from it

Something that confuses me though, is why the evil Dale Doppleganger sees Bob in the mirror in the final scene of the last episode. Bob and the doppleganger are two seperate entities (as we see them laughing with each other in the lodge)

He must be under the effect of Lorne and Eve, too, presum, presumally.

Great article, Sheridan - nothing I can add, except to say that I like when people dig down and are able to extract these things - been watching this show and film for twenty years and have never made that connection. I do like the theory a lot.

I like that article a lot, though I feel like the author is identifying a lot of the symbols involved in the Lodge mythology, but missing something in putting it together into an interpretation (which I don't have much to add to either!)

One thing I disagree with is that the object floating behind the curtains is the planet Saturn - to me the shadow looks very much like a piece of paper floating by, and my thought has always been that it connects to the missing page in Laura's diary, which revealed the identity of BOB - Cooper is somehow intuiting subconsciously here the information on that missing sheet.

One more hint as well... might that statue in the Red Room, besides being an artifact of Greek culture, have a connection to another planet?

reply

Here on this very forum, I read a theory according to which the statues are clues: whether they have arms or not reveals whether we're in the White or the Black Lodge.

The shadow is definitely that of a bird. Ron Garcia confirms this when he says Lynch wanted to construct the shadow of a bird, and explains how he did it, in a podcast from the American Society of Cinematography: http://tinyurl.com/q39ffpt.

It was Waldo. Also I like your blog

I cant beat monster butts, but I can beat your hungry guts. Thats for sure!

reply

Ah yes, poor Waldo. Considering how time works in the Lodges, I guess we can assume he was reunited with Laura in the afterlife.

Btw, I've now fixed the podcast link on the post above. Forgot the backslash on the url.
