Reassessment of a Quality Film
I personally believe this film could be the most underrated film ever. It's definitely top 5. People hated it upon it's release and people hate it to this day. I have to admit the first time I watched this, I was slightly disappointed. I had expectations that it would correct what went wrong with the show (the Windom Earle plot line) basically after the reveal of Laura's killer. It did not do that for me. However after multiple viewings since, I've done a complete 180. What makes this undervalued piece of art great is the things it attempted to do. It changed the mood of the world within Twin Peaks. The timeline of events leading up to the events of Palmer's death is purely tragic and horrifying. The first half of the show is a fantastic mystery, thriller and drama. Yes the townsfolk are all shocked and rattled by the prom queen's death but there is still a feeling of peace and playfulness amongst all the backstabbing and affairs between the townsfolk. The back half of the show is waterlogged, campy and completely lacking substance and worthy storyline. Fire Walk With Me shows at her base, a beautiful human being with destructive behavior and a horrific destiny which is unavoidable. It is truly devastating to witness. Yes for the people who watched the show first (highly recommendable), we know she died. We know the rumors, the statements to her character but we never were able to see her live. This film almost makes me wish I didn't. That's what makes it a viable film to the "franchise". Yes I wish Cooper had a bigger part but it's a prequel, so how does it make sense for him to play a huge role. Overall Lynch made one hell of a horror film about the human response to negative stimuli. I feel this film will continue to ascend to the top of my favorite Lynch films and perhaps my all time list. Without a shadow of a doubt it's vastly better than the last 12 episodes (although I do like the finale by default, it ended as good as that storyline would allow). Perhaps we can all reaccess this film for better or worse.
