They've only seen the pilot and the second episode? It's showing at Alamo tonight and I'm curious to go check it out

I missed TP's when it first aired. So I had to catch up later and I did so by purchasing the pilot (it had the alternate ending) and FWWM.
So I didn't get to episodes 1-29 for quite some time later.
I loved both films and thought they went together nicely.
Having said that, you get a bit more out of FWWM if you watch all the episodes first, which should go without saying I guess.
Lastly, if you don't want a spoiler as to who the killer is you should wait on FWWM, as the series takes you into the early second season before it's revealed.
