'We're safe here, nobody ever dies in cartoons!'

In the cartoon segment of this movie, John Ritter's verbatim quote is "We're safe here, nobody ever dies in cartoons, well that's not necessarily true. I can think of quite a few cartoons where characters have died. For example some of the old Tex Avery cartoons like, Screwy Squirrell got killed, George and Junior committed suicide, a couple characters on the Simpsons have died over the years, Bambi's mother got killed, people got killed on Beavis and Butt-head occasionally, and I'm not even including some of the newer cartoons like Family Guy, and South Park where people get killed quite alot. I don't even count the cartoons in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, because that already explained how they found a way to kill em.

reply

You're analyzing a comedy. This line is known as a joke.

reply

I know but still jokes usually represent something that's true, and I'm not trying to critique the movie because they made one error in one of their lines, in fact alot of other people for awhile also had the theory that cartoon characters couldn't die, I was just wondering if anyone else noticed other oldies cartoons who actually have been killed before this movie was made.

When I was a kid, I always thought it was a rule or something that people couldn't die in cartoons, because what I watched, it never happened. That's the mindset of a kid... like the KID in the movie. DURR

reply

I think the spirit of the line is true; for the most part, cartoon characters don't die. You can find exceptions like you did, of course, but I would classify _Family Guy_, _South Park_, _Beavis and Butthead_, and _The Simpsons_ as "adult" cartoons, and _Bambi_, of course, is a movie. And when characters do die in "classic" cartoons, it seems as though the creators make a special effort to show these characters as angels or ghosts -- so, in effect, they're not really dead.

But why nitpick in the first place? It's a character making a generalization about cartoons, and his idea is quickly proved wrong -- or at least they feel enough in danger that they need to escape the death cat.

reply

lol Your wrong and a idiot, there talking about classic or children's cartoons which is TRUE no one EVER died. NOT aldult one slike south park or simpsons.

Knock down the world it's uh loving you

Hmm.. Let's look at this for a moment. First, it's "you're wrong and aN idiot". Second, it's "they're", not there.

I know.., correcting someone's spelling online makes about as much sense as "countig your chickens before they're hatched."

"Just because I'm moody, doesn't mean you're not irritating!"

reply

LOL Your a real douche you run away from the topic by counting my few spelling problems?

Say baby do you wanna lay down by me SA MA MEEEEEEEEEEEYYYYY!!

reply

I never ran away from it.
As for "few", ..yeah, okay.

As for dying in a cartoon, Wile E. Coyote blew up quite a few time, never died.
Elmer Fudd had a few "hunter's accidents" and never died.
Daffy Duck.., well, he had his beak blown off, but never really died.

There is one time I remember a cartoon character dying. It was a wolf that wanted to join the 3 pigs' band, but he didn't have enough soul ("wasn't HOT enough") to join their jazz/blues band. He died and went to Hell; came back and was hot enough.

Now, as for me being a "douche".., I can't be. For reasons I can't go into here.

"Just because I'm moody, doesn't mean you're not irritating!"

reply

lol Apprently YOU didn't understand the "adult cartoon" part I was talking about.

Say baby do you wanna lay down by me SA MA MEEEEEEEEEYYYYY!!

reply

You're the wrong whose wrong and an idiot, and not to mention regarding your comment, you're obvious not familiar with the legendary Tex Avery. Quite a few of his characters either got killed or killed themselves, I even mentioned a couple of them in my post, like Screwy squirrell and George and Junior, but obviously somebody as thick-headed as you can't comprehend this things.

reply

lol NOT every "classic or kids" cartoon EVER dumbass. This is what I mean and the movie means just in general 95% of thh cartoons one nobody ever dies but some do.

Say baby do you wanna lay down by me SA MA MEEEEEEEEEYYYYY!!

reply

That's not what you said though, you said nobody ever died in the classic cartoons, and now you're contradicting your previous statement by changing it to 95% percent of the time. Make up your mind on what you want to say before insulting me for actually having the facts straight!

reply

lol Mjust like the movie RETARD it was meaning in general not allways. And plus I have never seen a Tex Avery cartoon so how would I know?

Say baby do you wanna lay down by me SA MA MEEEEEEEEEYYYYY!!

reply

Look, the insults are unneeded, just because I've had the facts to back up all of your phony responses, like bringing up the Tex Avery classics was to use an example, verifying my point, but once again you've failed to comprehend that and have blown this whole thing way outta proportion.

reply

Your a RETARD who takes things WAY too literally.

Say baby do you wanna lay down by me SA MA MEEEEEEEEEYYYYY!!

reply

See once again you can't come up with anything clever or witty to say in your defense, so you come up with another immature insult, which is quickly proving to me how much of an uneducated simpleton you are!

reply

lol You are just running away from me now get over it and go away..

Say baby do you wanna lay down by me SA MA MEEEEEEEEEYYYYY!!

reply

Get over it and go away? FYI this is my topic board, and I made a general critique about something in a movie that appeared alittle off to me, and you've taken it way out of proportion, and now you're begging me to go away, but at the same time you have this inept theory that I'm running away from you. So in other words, can you explain your last statement in a non-moronic way.

reply

Dopey, your grammar sucks. Mr. Coyote blew up a few time? That isn't even mentioning your punctuation. You shouldn't correct people, ever.

reply

My apologies for missing the 's'. It should have read: "Quite a few times."

..and now I will take your advice and not correct people, EVER.

"Just because I'm moody, doesn't mean you're not irritating!"

reply

The cartoon where Tex Avery's character Screwy Squirrel got killed in the end is entitled "Lonesome Lenny". I don't know whether or not they've got it on youtube, if so, definitely check it out!

reply

Does anyone realize that Family Guy, South Park, and Beavis & Butt-head were all created AFTER this movie? And he's pointing out the fact that carton characters get put through such hell and still get up covered in soot. Watch Tom and Jerry (Which I think is the primary spoof here)

DanandKirb is the biggest moron on earth just ignore this troll.

Dark Knight is the worst movie ever. The villain died before it even came out.

reply

It seriously took you over a year to come up with the lamest insult against me, once again showing me that your inept mind is incapable of going any deeper than that of a 3rd grade version of George W. Bush, and not to mention what you say about the Dark Knight at the bottom of your thread, showing that you obviously don't understand the concept of a prequel, because if you did you'd realize that the Joker's story in the Dark Knight took place during his younger years, and the original Batman where the Joker died which I assume you're referring to, was when he was older, so get your facts straight before calling anyone else a moron, you simpleton!

reply

I think he is referring to the fact that Heath Ledger died before the Dark Knight came out in theatres. Its sad I know.

Die Hard is my favorite Christmas Movie!

Hey Fear_is, everything you've written has been ignorant, wrong, mean spirited, and insulting. If you didn't write like a handicapped chimpanzee I'm sure more people would get over feeling sorry for you and tell you to set yourself on fire. As it is I find it hilarious how completely moronic everything you write appears. Never mind that you can't spell. You can't even convey a concept without screwing it up. And anytime someone calls you out on being a little pussy bitch, you say they are "running away from the subject".

If you aren't a troll, I feel even more sorry for you, because you actually believe what you write.

reply

You're not thinking hard enough. Daffy Duck did die at least once, when he was competing with Bugs to show who was the better entertainer in "Show Biz Bugs." Blew himself up by drinking gasoline, nitro, gunpowder and uranium. Sylvester the cat did use up all nine lives in "Satan's Waitin'."

A better statement might be "nobody ever stays dead in cartoons." The same could be said of many recent comics, where dead superheroes and supervillains get resurrected regularly.

reply

You came in calling someone an idiot using poor grammar and spelling errors, then you call the man a douche? I don't know what browser you are using but mine puts these handy little red lines under misspellings. And come one, contractions are not that hard to use properly. So if you don't want to look stupid take a few moments to look over your post for mistakes.

ON TOPIC
A few times people die, but usually they don't. Like another poster mentioned, when they do die they are usually shown as a ghost, angle or demon (if that's what you would call them)
Example that comes to mind is the talent agent episode of a Looney Toons cartoon where they guy had a trick to show and was dismissed repeatedly until the end when he swallowed tons of explosives and blew up, he was shown as a ghost making the comment, "too bad I can only do it once."

reply

If it wasn't for pointing out typos and grammar mistakes IMDBers wouldn't have anything to discuss.

It's so funny, I was talking to a friend of mine the other day and I told him that I HATE when people point out typos on net forums and he said, "Why do you even go to IMDB?" Like he knew where I was talking about and I dind't even have to tell him lol

Question your prejudices.

The line is tongue-in-cheek. It is an error not on the writers' part, but on the character of Ritter's. While I have not seen the film myself, I can infer by the description and having had enough movie experience that the line is a joke, the humor being that cartoons are in fact probably the least safe of any television universe. Cartoon characters are constantly tortured, maimed, blown up, and killed...all in good fun, of course.

The word "die" in the statement is simply used to represent itself and words like hurt and harm, just as a way get the point of the joke across. "Dies" just sounds a little funnier and has a faster pace than "We're safe here, nobody ever gets harmed in cartoons." This alternative sounds more sarcastic than clueless, and the whole joke is supposed to be the cluelessness of the statement.

The character's humorously-inept thinking behind the statement seems that he mistakenly believes that because cartoons are usually made for children and commonly associated with innocence and childhood, they then must automatically be a safer haven.

reply

It's a general statement he was making, that's all.

Actually, it was a Tom and Jerry cartoon. Based on their rules, no one actually dies. It was a free pass for them as a break.
