I am not too sure on what undercover cops are allowed to do on the job, but is murdering someone in that situation legal? I realize it was in self defence, but they were car jacking her?

It was accidental though, seemed like his gun went off rather than a deliberate shooting. He would face manslaughter charges though, I agree. His reaction afterwards is one of shock.

If she were, then he would had been cleared before the paperwork for the use of petty cash to pay for the waitress's tip at the beginning of the movie was completed.

Orange was participating in the carjacking with White, but didn't want to blow his cover by not participating. Orange would not have said, "White, this is illegal", especially after robbing a bank with him. The shot was probably unexpected from the woman and Orange instinctively responded by getting shot, which is..."I better shoot her before she shoots me again and kills me". It happens so fast that the reaction fit the circumstance. Agreeable?

I watched that scene again today, and it's possible he was trying to save her while also protecting his cover. He was on the ground and his shot was at a high angle, basically going through her right shoulder, although it certainly could've entered her chest. Additionally officers are trained to fire 'double-taps' in the center of body mass, about a foot lower than where his single shot struck.
It's plausible to me that he could've been trying to wound her so Mr White wouldn't execute her.

I doubt he would even be able to think clearly after being shot. It was a reflex retaliation. He didn't want to kill her...but he did try to.

when white is dragging him into the rendezvous orange is saying 'she had a baby, man'.. so he certainly felt bad about it... it's unclear how he knew that.. maybe there was a babyseat in the back of the car but its not shown.. Oddly I just heard this bit of dialogue for the first time today, it was about my 25th viewing.. I also noticed that when the woman gets shot, the front seats have no headrests. This is so they can film the scene inside the car.. but it's not very realistic hey? Who drives around with the headrests removed?
