there are a couple of references to it. sylvie makes a remark about herself not being a lesbian, then she states "well maybe i am". also, the pair tongue kiss and share a bed. the actions of the characters, however, also link in with other main themes in the movie; ivy wanting to be accepted by a family, being the head of the family, controlling sylvie, sylivie's longing for a friend, etc... it's more ivy's raw sexuality and how she is not afraid to cross boundaries, along with sylvie's initial infactuation with her that clearly show there is a 'subtle' homosexual theme to this movie. it's not a strong theme, but it is notable and poison ivy goes down as a movie which was adhering to common trend in the late 80's/early 90's.

There is a definite sexual tension between Barrymore and Gilbert's characters in this movie. I always felt that Gilbert's character was at a point in her life where she was questioning her sexuality. At one point, I think she even tells Ivy that she thinks she might be a lesbian. As for Ivy, I have a feeling she would be up for anything: men, women, children, small farm animals, whatever's available.

At the begining of the movie when she says she might be lesbian she then says she definetly is not. But when Ivy tells her that she loves her(not meaning it of course)and then kisses her it looks like she starts to get nervous. It is apparent that she is scared that she might after all be a lesbian.

Farm animals! hillarious. I'm watching this now, and yeah, good ole Drew is up fer anything!

Yeah at the beginning Sylvie says "I'm not a lesbian...well maybe I am...nah, I told my Mom I was one once though." she doesn't just say "I'm not a lesbian...well maybe I am".

And at the end when Sylvie thought that was her Mom she was just going to kiss her real quick but then Ivy started to put her tongue in her mouth then Sylvie pushed her away knowing it was Ivy.

So I think Ivie was bisexual, and MAYBE Sylvie.

Sara Gilbert is a lesbian, and Drew Barrymore is bisexual in real life. Go figure.

Sara's character was attracted to Ivy, but, she was nervous that she was, almost like Lili Taylor in The Haunting, Catherine Zeta-Jones' character was putting the moves on her and was attracted to her, but, she was nervous that she was to her.

Sylvie had homosexual leanings..Ivy did not. However, Ivy sensed those homosexual feelings in Sylvie and basically exploited them in order to manipulate her. One thing, also, there was a definite oedipal/electra complex theme going on here...Sylvie was in love with her mother. Ivy reminded Sylvie of her mother...I don't have to get into it; if you think about it enough, you will see all the clues and evidence that point that way...
