The confusion on this subject comes from the fact that, originally, Leo had a cameo with a small speaking part. He appeared in the original theatrical version and in early airings of the film on Cinemax in the early 1990s. However, inexplicably, he was cut from all future versions of the film. He does not appear in a speaking part in the VHS or DVD versions.
Originally, he appears as a background extra 2 or 3 times, and then also has a small part in the scene where the dog has been hit by a car.
As the scene originally played, when Gilbert and Berrymore are at the rope swing talking, you can very scarcely see Leo talking with someone in the background. Suddenly, a kid yells that a dog has been hit by a car. There is an overhead shot with the camera slowly panning down as a group of kids surround the dying dog. Leo is standing there giving an account of what happened to the other kids. Then, Gilbert comes up and kneels beside the dog, and Berrymore crushes its head with a stick. Leo's lines were something like, "He just ran out there. And they didn't even see him..." Later, he can also be seen running out of school with other kids. He may have even been at the rope swing another time I didn't notice. So, he must have worked on the film at least a couple of days, and had a small speaking part. THAT'S why he was credited.
But, as I said, the VHS and DVD versions cut abruptly from someone saying the dog got hit to a close-up of the dog and Sara Gilbert kneeling down, and Berrymore killing it.
So, now, most people are like, "Where's Leo in this thing?!?"
LOL.
